I have considered one of the types of sharks you mentioned and if I was doing like a 750g+ tank I would but I think even a 500g is too small for them.
Interesting. I've seen people say that a 150-200 gallon tank is adequate. So that's not accurate? Also, I saw that sharks might need a tank that curves. Is that true?

I have seen that said as well. I think they are far too large for tanks that small. More so with the bioload created by how messy of eaters they are. I am also not a shark expert. Never had one. But would love to *IF* I had a much bigger tank than both of my big tanks. I have a 220g and 525g.

Wasn't there a guy building a whole giant set up for a huge tank with several black tips? I think it was India or somewhere.

How big a tank do you need? Oh Jay just answered that. How many gallons of water?
somewhere in the 15000 gallon range more would probably be better. Black tips are pelagic meaning more open swimmers unlike epaulette, bamboo, cat, wobbegong that are more sedentary.

Hi!

I'm a freelance journalist working on an article on people who keep sharks in home aquariums. I'm mostly focusing on epaulette, bamboo and cat sharks, but I'm just starting my research so I'd love to chat with anyone who currently has a shark or has kept one in the past. From what I've read, keeping sharks in home aquariums might be controversial, so I'd like to hear your views on that as well.

I'm a big fan of sharks. I grew up in Florida. I've had freshwater aquariums before.

Please let me know if you're available to chat.

Thanks!

Best,

Hallie Lieberman

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

I've kept all three of those species. I'd be happy to give you input, just PM me.

I'm a retired public aquarium curator. Thinking back, my first magazine article in 1981 was "Sharks in the Marine Aquarium" (grin).

Hey Hallie,
I have a male and female epaulette pair and a banded female shark that I’m actually looking to find a new loving home for as she’s gotten big for my tank but until I find the right person she’s with me and makes my count 3. I’ve had sharks since I first got into the hobby years ago. If you have any questions I’m happy to answer

I’m planning on having a black tip reef shark
Woahhh props that’s a huge tank and a lot of fish lol but would be really fun to be able to dive with your own pet if your tank is large enough!! Post pics of the set up plz!!

Minus the wobbegong the others are all carpet sharks because they are so sedentary and their mouths are totally different from non carpets. Wobbies are their own beast

Hallie,

Some sources you may wish to check out.

They were much more popular and available 15-20 years ago and frequently discussed in online forums. You’ll find an incredible amount of info.

1. Sharks and Rays in the Home aquaria Scott Michael A book that was responsible for increased popularity and interest.
2. Monsterfishkeepers.com.
3. Way back machine sharkraycentral.com if archived. A whole forum dedicated to sharks with 1000s of posts
4. Reefcentral.com. Again go back 15 years.
5. Elasmobranch husbandry manual vol 1 > vol 2. A collection of articles about husbandry compiled from the Cincinnati Zoo.

Good luck.

It seems like an old post, but if you're still interested in chatting about sharks, I'd be happy to talk to you; I've kept several species since 1989 and currently run a breeding program for grey bamboo sharks to supply the aquarium trade while also easing pressure on wild specimens.

Tracy Morgan has a huge Shark tank in his Back Yard. And multiple tanks both fresh and reef in his house in NJ.
