As long as I can remember I’ve wanted a reef tank. I finally pulled the trigger and figured why not build a 150 gallon SPS dominant tank for my first go at it. What’s the worst that could happen??? Pray that this doesn’t crash and burn I will never hear the end of it from my wife. I’m counting on the community to call me out on my mistakes so I can avoid that!

Gear list:
2 Kessil ap9x paired with 2 orphek OR3 bars
Apex pro with trident
Dual cor15 return pumps
Dual Gyre 350’s
One mp-40 I’d like to add a second but honestly don’t know where I will put this one.
80lbs TBS sand
8lbs live rock for the sump
Kessil refugium lamp
Maxspect sk2000 skimmer

I’m on a time crunch right now because my live sand arrives Friday need to wire everything up and plumb in my auto top off and auto water change system.

Starting out with a 5’ planet aquarium 150. Funny enough my LFS ordered me a 118gallon and they tried to blame me and make me pay a restocking fee. Needless to say I’ll be finding a different LFS to give my money to moving forward.

I spent last night mounting some apex gear. I thought I had finished my plumbing then I realized I forgot to install the flow meter so I get to chop up this return plumbing and try again tomorrow.

I

Apologize for the terrible grammar in throwing this together 15 minutes before work. Cheers!

What kind of livestock are you wanting to put in there?

Following I just picked up the same tank yesterday and working on the hardware now.

Curious if you think 2 cor pumps will get anywhere near full power? Maybe you have more head than me but it seems like 1 would do? How many turns are you targeting?

I’m doing 3 part on these two DoS modules. The DOS for water change is mounted in the garage by the mixing station. I found these on Facebook marketplace for cheap. I’m also going to try and use the garage dos for ATO.

I’m dumb I just realized you said COR not DOS smh. Yes it’s way overkill I am running two for redundancy. One pushes water through the UV the other goes straight to the return. I think if I was going to run a single return I would do the COR 20 but I have a tendency to over engineer.

If the quartz sleeve cracks in that UV, you will have a disaster. And it does and will happen.
You asked us to call you on any mistakes...I'm doing my part, sir. 👍

What do you think about the Planet Tanks. I’m thinking of getting out the Tideline Crystaline.
It’s pretty nice, for the price you can’t beat it. The silicone wasn’t perfect but only someone with OCD would care or notice. This one is the tideline, their website sucks they don’t really have customer support everything is handled by the place you buy it from. Product is nice though and priced right.

A single cor15 is plenty for a return pump. I would suggest NOT using the cor20, they seem to burn through power supplies.

See where the socket goes into the UV on the right? If the quartz sleeve inside breaks, that seal could be compromised and leak water on the floor I'm pretty sure. If anyone else knows otherwise for this particular UV then please correct me.

I mount my UV vertically so the water outlet top port is below the bulb socket/seal. But that's just me.

Figure I’ll toss this in here it’s been sitting on my tool box for 2 months waiting to go into the tank
That looks perfect for that tank. Hope I can do as well. Haven't gotten dry rock yet.

I am trying to convince my wife we do t need the entire cast from finding Nemo smh.

I honestly need some help here. I have a few on my hit list:

Yellow tang
Sailing tang
Couple wrasses melanrius, flasher, leopard
I love goby’s so I’ll find a few of them to put in.
I love my inverts so lots of crabs and shrimp I’d like to out a starfish in eventually.

I haven’t really thought this out that much I’ve just been focused on getting water sand and rocks in the box.

If you get a melanurus, don't get another wrasse with a similar coloration. My Melanurus killed a brand new red head solon fairy, and man I was not happy about it. I was so happy to get that fish. And the thing is, unless something flat out kills one, they are pretty durable little suckers. An Exquisite fairy wrasse will work. I have one and he is left alone. Just keep the colors dissimilar. They see that and think to themselves "check out this dude trying to move in on my game!" and that's usually bad news.

Thank you for the solid advice! I’m not really sold on any of them except the leopard wrasse.
