So I've been wanting to get some angels in my new tank, and wanted to see what everyone's experience was with them, mostly the large angels.

How hardy are they?
Are they prone to ich or other diseases more than others?
What is the general temperament of these guys?

Please share your experiences and pictures as well :)

I have angels for about 9 months now. I have found them to have a better temperament than tangs. From my experience, the large angels seem to establish a pecking order. Here is pic of the tank with the angels, I added the emperor and blueface together and the passer later. I have no issue putting them in a reef with SPS and will be adding some SPS into my tank shortly.

Here's my two. Both are in a mixed reef tank with clams. They do the ocational nipping but they're worth it imo

Nice guys, gorgeous fish.I've been addicted to the F&F wrasses, but have always wanted some nice angels and butterfly fish. The Goldflake is on my list for sure.

I actually picked up a multibar angel today at the LFS, but he didn't eat tonight when I fed. However, he was only in the tank for a few hours before I fed mysis.

NICE Goldflake!! ^^^

Just took fish pictures yesterday. Had them both since little babies. The Emperor was originally smaller than the BF, but he eats like a pig, and grunts like one, too.

Great pics. An Emperor was definitly one that I've been interested in. How do you guys think they would act towards some active wrasses?

In general, fish that aren't of the same size or similar shape pretty much ignore each other. Of course, there are exceptions. Live Aquaria also has a nice chart of general fish compatibility: Marine Compatability Chart

I have a pomacanthus navarchus in my 125g. He is about 4" long.

I have him in with softies, lps, and he ignores everything. I give credit to feeding a lot, and also feeding NLS.

Although the tangs are definitely more violent, my angel is king of the tank. When you see a mark on someone's side, its usually from him. Back in the day he used to trade punches with the lionfish. Then the lionfish went away.

Decent fish, but totally hit or miss on the corals. Some will even pick at SPS polyps.

Sorry I dont have a picture, my camera has something up with it and is no longer capable of taking good pictures of moving or even mainly stationary fish. You can check out my video for a glance of him though.

Oh, and as far as disease goes, I just had a tang outbreak of ich. The worst outbreak I have seen in my 9 years in the hobby, and after removing all of the fish, he shows no signs. Mine is tough. The real key is getting them onto prepared foods, and having a complete diet. NLS can be used as a staple for angels.

Thanks guys, appreciate the info. An Emperor is def gonna be in this tank :) FOr some reason, to me, they just look like they would be less prone to diseases than, say, tangs. Maybe its just cause they look thicker, or their scales are bigger, haha.

By the way, what is NLS guys?

Not the greatest pic, but, here's my Scribbled Angel. Lost a bunch of polyp extension when I added him, but, it is defintely worth it, in my opinion. My favorite fish.

I have seen scribbleds go both ways...I have a friend and his definitely chows corals. Another guy said that he had one in a reef setting for 12 years or something...never had any issues.

Maybe my Navarchus will develop coral eating tendencies as he gets larger. SPS PE seems to be down in my tank, but I cant tell if that is because of other issues. I spend a lot of time around my tank and have not seen him eat any coral or nibble once.

I think this is the same with most fish. People say that a foxface rabbitfish will eat zoas like crazy, and then the next person never has a problem. I tend to think that most fish have their own personality, and may not trend towards the norm.
