I’m a big fan of the basement sump, if you can pull it off. Mine is a wide open (no baffles) Rubbermaid 150 gallon stock tank. Everything external. I ran a 3” external PVC manifold for my external pumps and external skimmer. With a basement setup, you don’t have to worry whether or not your equipment is too big. Or too noisy. I love seeing others that have done the basement sump thing.

I have a 90 gallon DT and run a DIY 50 Breeder sump. It was purchased as a 40B and didn't discover it was 50 until I purchased a second 40B to redo the sump and noted the difference in size.

Here's an older picture when I was running a 7 inch sock and biopellets.

Here it is today.....no sock and biopellet reactor.

Total of three chambers where I have two return lines each coming into the sump in opposite back corners of the sump. Far left chamber is sock holder and skimmer and one heater. Far right is refugium with pH probe. Center section is return section with second heater, ATO float switches, and dosing lines for alk, calc and DIY NOPOX.

135 gallon display - sump with Triton setup

Refugium - Skimmer - Return

No socks, no roller, just a well lit refugium and a good skimmer.

My sump/refugium is as basic as they get. It's a 30 gallon extra high. It has a deep sand bed and rock. The return pump just sits on some of the rock on the left side of the tank. The right side is where the drain is, which is a reverse durso to cut down on noise. Gracilaria grows on the rock.

It's super simple but it works well.

Nice how is the Santa Monica scrubber working for you? I’ve been debating on one for my tank.

Because of the dimensions of 55 I used two sumps. On drain split to both sides.

Right side skimmer - refugium - UV return - gravity feeds to left side

20231227_221330.jpg

Left side return pump, carbon reactor, bio-balls.
