I’m at a loss.

I have a 15g nano HelloReef tank. I’m about 9 months in. I am neurotic about water parameters. I added a protein skimmer, small reactor with carbon and phosguard, uv light, 2-3 partial water changes a week. My parameters are very consistent and well within parameters I’m aiming for. I have 2 clowns, a goby and pistol shrimp. Multiple types of coral that are thriving (Duncan, torch, zoa, GSP, mushrooms, goniopora) and BTA that splits so much I have to find people to take them. Corraline algae growing. Clean up crew with 3 hermits, 3-4 Nassarius snails, couple turbo snails, and !!2 emerald crabs. No losses with anything I’ve listed.

Problem is I cannot keep cleaner or peppermint shrimp alive longer than 4-5 weeks. They get added, are active, molt, eat during dinner time, then after about a month, never see them again.

Read emerald crab maybe eat them? My pistol shrimp has been there from the beginning and he’s a small guy. So not sure what is happening.

When I had them I would do daily feedings to the anemone with mysis shrimp and the shrimp would actively feed daily so idk what happens to them.

Any ideas?

Do you know if the shrimp disappear during molting or not?
If there is a lot of BTA - then they would be the most likely suspects to serial murder shrimps in my opinion,

Sincerely Lasse

I can usually tell by how they act before a molt and it’s not always during that time. I have only one BTA in there at a time and when it splits, I gift the other one.

Pistol shrimp can be aggressive to other shrimp.

Have you noticed any of your other inverts molting successfully?
Minerals such as calcium and magnesium are required for a healthy molt, and if there wasn't enough of that present, it's possible the shrimp died because of that.

I check my parameters weekly and dose accordingly. I don’t think I’ve ever had ca mag or alk outside of regular parameters.

Maybe not feeding enough? They always seem to rush to the syringe that I use to feed mysis shrimp to the anemone??
