Skimmerless

Anyone with a 120g or larger tank running purely skimmerless?

It would be a horrible idea.

A skimmer is kind of like clothing, sure you get away without wearing them but normal people will look at you strange.

if you didnt run a skimmer, i would suggest a huge refugium. that said, there are too many advantages to running a skimmer not to have one.

When I got into this Years ago we did not have skimmers.

Stock lightly or do large and often water changes.

When was this Harry ? I always remembered a Skimmer . In my teenager years . LOL AHH When the internet was just getting started and Sprung was getting bashed for removing bio balls in a wet dry . The term live rock aka "berlin filtration" was born . Reef Notes In FAMA is what I looked forward too.

I've done skimmerless with small tanks- have a 14G right now skimmerless and ready to set up a 30 gal. Light fish load, good water params, macroalgaes help.

Have a 40b that is skimmerless and pretty much filterless that has been doing well for a year almost now.Its stocked pretty heavy also.reg water changes do wonders but im not sure would wanna do this with a bigger tank.

From what I understand its possible as long as you have plenty of life rock, very good aeration (or surface agitation), and a refugium that is at least as big as your display tank.

It would be harder, but good luck!

if you don't mind doing large water changes regularly i don't see any problems with it...actually know a couple people that do it this way....im just to lazy i run a skimmer and i get the best so i have to work less....lol

An LFS here has a 260 gallon display that they are running skimmerless, sumpless, and w/o refugium. It is mixed with softies, LPS, and SPS and the corals appear to be doing pretty well. The owner said he's doing it to prove it can be done and because a local reefer was talking smack on a forum saying it was bound to crash.....so he's doing it out of pride and principle as well. It's been running this way for about a year now. Water certainly isn't the clearest I've seen.

I would never try it. Personally running skimmer, refugium, and algae scrubber on my 120.
