Well, here it is… Mr. Smithers 150 gallon mixed reef.
Let’s start with the Tank:
150 Gallon-60â€x24â€x24†(standard dimensions) I really like the width but wish that I had the money to go with a custom 150 gallon (48†long, 24†tall and 30†wide).
Tank was reef ready with a center overflow (1.5†drain “Durso†and 1†return)
The Stand is a simple DIY stand using 2â€x4†and Oak plywood. Nothing fancy but it works and gives me a good amount of space underneath. The Canopy is a little tall for most people and that is because of my lighting, which I will be getting too.
Filtration:
The Filtration is done with 150-200 lbs of live stand using a mix of aragonite and live sand. This gives me about a 5†sand bed. I have about 150-180 lbs of live rock in the system. In my sump, I have a 15-gallon refuge using a deep sand bed (5â€), live rock and some macro algae. The Skimmer is an ASM G3 using a Sedra 5000 and a gate valve mod. I run a filter socks a couple of days a month when I am cleaning the glass and blowing off the rock. I run carbon 24/7 via a phosphate reactor tee-off of my return. I think that everyone should run carbon; it gives the water a nice clear look and no draw backs. I also use a low flow sump, using a Quiteone 4000 for the return; this gives my skimmer some good dwell time.
My sump is a DIY acrylic sump, measuring 42†long, 20†tall and 20†wide. This houses my skimmer, heaters, return pump, Phosphate reactor and 14 gallon refugium.
Lighting:
My lighting consists of two 175-watt Iwasaki bulbs in Lumenbright III reflectors powered by two Icecap ballast. I really think this set up rocks. It the most bang for your buck, with high par values and low power usage. I supplement these bulbs with two HO- 54-watt actinic T5’s. This gives me a nice viewing color and the MH gives me good coral growth.
Iwasaki bulbs
Dosing:
I just recently started to run a Calcium reactor, before this I would dose Bulkreefsupply two part. I run a Korallin C3002 calcium reactor. I like that everything is internal and if just feels nice and chucky. Very well built calcium reactor and you can find them used easily.
