Snail ID Help: Turbo vs Astrea or something else?

I bought a "Turbo" snail online from a local reef store, but I'm beginning to suspect it is not actually a Turbo.

Apparently Turbos have rounded shells and have the ability to flip themselves.

My guy is definitely conical, with some very rugged edges - and about 3.5cm in diameter. It's also flipped once in the first 24 hours in the tank. I spotted it and helped it back over.
I am in New Zealand, for context.

Did I get bait-and-switched? Or should I have just waited longer to see if it would have flipped itself back?

Def not a turbo and they can’t flip themselves…lost many a turbo to an overnight flipping and death upside down . I would agree with the probability it is an astrea.

This does look like an Astrea snail to me. Some people do refer to them as Astrea turbo snails though I don't think they are even in the same species group. They are all turbin snails from the same general family but the turbos are a species all their own.

FWIW I prefer to have a bunch of Astrea and Trochus snails over the turbos anyhow. I have had turbos bulldose through frags and even colonies braking them off and sending them toppling into other frags and colonies of corals. This almost certainly ends in one of the corals dying. Unfortunately coral that dies will usually be the more expensive one, that's just murphys law there.

The Banded Trochus snails are cool too because they will actually reproduce in captivity. So you won't have to keep replacing them as their life cycle completes.

^^^ this! I have at least 50 baby trochus now populating in my 100g that look like various stages of dots all over the glass in the tank! To add to this, I also love margarita snails and of course nassarius for the sand bed!

my astreas wont right themselves either. Lost half of them flipped over during a vacation

Yeah I’ve lost them too and margaritas. I think, but not percent sure, that nassarius are the only ones that can right themselves??

my nassarius right themselves in no time but actually all the turbo and trochus i had never had a problem flipping themselves. Im thinking it might be a difference for aussie species

Yeah, I’m sure there are a bunch of different ones so I’m guessing you are right. I actually love the turbos, as long as everything is glued down really good, and wish they lasted in my tanks!

I like turbos too. I glue down everything because of the urchine and turbos are the only ones reproduce in my tank and have 1 baby survived dino outbreak out of all snails Hope yours have a good life in your tank
