This may be a dumb question but, is loud noise bad for coral?
I know it can harm fish , I’m not concerned about them . This post is in regards to the corals .
if you put your ear against the aquarium- it’s loud in there . pumps and filters . It makes a lot noise . Does it have affect on the corals all else equal ?
Has anyone tried to quite down the noise in there aquarium and did it do anything or nothing ?

My home stereo runs 125.5db on the sound pressure app on my phone. They never complained. My biggest worry is the vibration on the seals.

Nice article. when I put my ear to the aquarium, it make machinery ( pumps ) noise . And loud to .
Me personally, I don’t have the time or money to do experiments. Ie twin tanks one with and one without noise from the equipment.
I would assume that to make a aquarium more quite I would have to run a sump and no pumps or power heads in the display tank . No air pumps or air stones . And the return pump from the sump would have to be all for water current.
But ultimately for what?? Will it help or not ???

Sounds are heard and there is response. My fish at times dart from footstep and when cabinet door to tank is opened, they dart to opposite corner thinking its' feeding time.
The same applies to fishing on a lake with that rule" To be quiet or the fish won't bite"

It is mainly the buzzing of the pumps I can hear when I listen to my reef tanks with a stethoscope.

You sure about that LOL. Maybe the app sucks, but 125 db is 'standing next to a 747 engine' loud. I've got a massive sound system, and it never exceeds 100 db.

Loud sounds do make my whites tree frogs croak, but never noted any negative effects on the tank. I wouldn't worry.

My tank is right next to my turntables and all my equipment, they all seem to enjoy the music. In fact, my frogspawn and my hammer have really opened up, I attribute it to a healthy dose of quality beats, and not the RedSea coral food...

4000 watts RMS .. 1500w running towers and center. 2500wrms running a PSI 18" sub. It hurts your ears. You can scream as loud as you want and your death to your own screams.

Its way to loud for human consumption.
Agreed the phone apps, I'm not sure it spot on. Ive tried a few different ones they all read different. My car has hit 131 db. I'd love to use their meters. Maybe I'll just buy one, one of these days.

There is an obvious affect of sound on fish. As a matter of fact, many fish use sound to communicate. The more recent article below agrees with the Smithsonian article posted earlier in this thread. Alas, you didn't ask about fish but corals. There are studies currently being done about this topic and hopefully they will provide some results soon.
