Hi guys, im after anybody's experience or thoughts on my problem, i changed the lighting on my reef from Gen3 to Gen4 radions using the acclimation, my alk normally sits at 7.5 but i guess the change of lights upset the corals and they stopped growing, as a result the alk rose to 9.3 over a 4 day period before i noticed a change and tested, my water is pretty good in all other aspects getting 97% on a icp this week, so now im left with damaged tips on several sps corals (covered in algae) it seems to be getting worse slowly, so what course of action can i take or should i sit it out, what is the likely outcome if anyone has experienced this? according to my alk consumption things are picking up, ive gone from dosing 414ml per day to 184ml, and this week so far its up to 240ml per day, any thoughts very much appreciated :)

Burnt tips is a fairly typical reaction to an alkalinity spike like that. I'm not aware of anything that you can really do to intervene except to keep things stable. How long ago did you ID the spike? Photos might be helpful too... Good luck!

Once algae takes hold within a coral's skeleton, it can cause a variety of problems. If it were me, if possible, clip off the damaged tips and apply a 'band aid' of superglue. If the coral is health, it will overgrow the glue.

Ok, thank you Dana, by a band aid of glue can that be done in situ?

Again, if it were me, I'd try to stop the growth of algae into the coral skeleton. What I don't know if this is possible for you (that is, colonies are established and difficult to remove, etc.) Best case= remove, snip, band aid, replace. Worst case = Snip and band aid in place.

ok, thanks for taking the time, yeah its hard to remove them, ill give them a snip, i wasn't sure if it would weaken the coral therefore its resistance to the burn!

Hi, due to the amount of tips involved I could not really get round them all so I removed what I could as per advice. I lost all my smooth skin acro, echinata, red dragon as it swept through them quickly, I saved my millies they have now recovered and coloured back up, and my torts have coloured back up but still growing over the once burnt tips! There is only my ssc which still looks grim (brown) and the skim is very very slowly receding and I can seem to do anything about it! So that’s where at today!
