what does it look like now?Growing 4 tiny arms
My red linckia lost all its 7 arms over the course of a month and now only has its central disk left. It is still alive and hiding in the rock work.I have seen sea stars lose limbs that continue to freely move afterwards, but typically only for a week or two before melting away. I’ve also heard or a limb with very little to no oral disc attached reforming a new mouth, but it seems to be rare. This takes it to a whole new level of my understanding.
It’s also important to note this is a fairly uncommon species (and genus for that matter) in the hobby and if it were a more common genus(Linkia and Fromia) I would expect the outcome to be melting quickly.
This comment is kinda rambling, sorry. This is rad.
Update on the starfish?Growing 4 tiny arms
Care to weigh in @Jay Hemdal ?
Can you take a picture of it when it comes out, and show it to me?So the latest update. The 4 tiny arms growing is still going on. They are growing very slowly. This has almost been a year now but as you can see in the last picture there are clearly 4 distinct new arms. It often disappears for a few weeks at a time. I assume behind the rocks but always reappears eventually.
I’m my extensive further research google seems to say they generally only regrow a singular lost arm or split down the middle to replicate but there is also always a disclaimer about how there are so many different types of starfish and many have not been extensively studied. I have also found very little about this specific type seems to be known since they are very rare in the hobby.
I did find a new Lfs a little farther away and I was asking the guy about it. He said when he had one of them a while back it split apart into 5 separate arms seemingly for no reason too. All the arms on his died after several months . I’m thinking since the 2 arms on mine stayed connected by a thread then there was enough of a central disk left to regrow the arms.
