Starting my build thread and documenting this tank. More picture to come with more progress.

I have been into aquariums since I was a small boy and always had one in my life until I joined to Army in 2004. I even worked at a LFS for several years and was constantly building new tanks for new animals. I got out of the army 1.5 years ago and had been keeping a 34RSM successfully for the past 4 years and with my last move I set up a drilled 93 cube. Starting working part time at a LFS again mostly for the discounts and helping people setup and maintain their tanks.

A few months ago I got the green light from my wife to set up a larger tank.(Never thought this would happen because she is still in the army and we move every 3 years). So started to look around for a good deal on a used setup. I decided on a 180-220 gallon based on the standard dimensions 72x24x?. I figured I should at least double my current tank size or why bother upgrading. With that figured out it was just about waiting for the right deal and starting looking for and buying equipment. The first thing I was able to buy was a 120L for the sump. The sump was rough and must have been 25+ years old. It had been resealed recently and I was able to leak test for a month in the garage as well. I was then able to find a 180 on Facebook that was indeed 25 years old. But get this, it has never had water in it, and was only stored inside. The silicone was perfect and the tank itself was the best 25 year old tank I have ever seen.(small chip on the corner from where it had been moved to 3 different states in the 25 years). Leak tested that in the garage for a month as well.

Next was to build the stand/ light rack. I had no clue about welding so I talked to the local welding instructor at the Advanced Welding Institute he said to get get him the parts cut and he would do it in his spare time since I was not in a hurry. He did an excellent job with the welds but messed up on a few of the gussets. The ones on the bottom side were to far in to fit the sump under the tank and the ones for the back top were put under the tank in the corners(messed up when he was rotating the stand around). I had him cut/grind out the gussets on the bottom so I could fit in the sump and since this tank was going to be drilled and have a center Synergy Shadow overflow the top gussets where not a huge concern. For what I paid I was more then happy. Had it powder coated locally and turned out fantastic.

Some of the equipment has come from Matt at Green Mountain Coral. Who I am very appreciative of his help and support. The reefing community is very small in Vermont and he is able to take care of most everyones needs without having to drive 3+ hours to Albany or Boston. I picked up the Lifereef skimmer and CA reactor from @Ditto who hooked me up with a great deal and I wish lived closer because he seemed like a good guy to be friends with. Thanks again Ditto. @TaylorPilot and exotic marine systems was very helpful with the baffles. I knew I wanted to try a Triton style sump and he had been sketching some. I had him send me custom baffles, I think the first set for a Triton sump. Plumbing and some parts were picked up from BRS.

Current Status: Waiting on the tank getting drilled. Then painting the back black, siliconing the ABS in the bottom. Plumbing is going to take the most time I think. Sump is mostly done just need to drill and mount bulkheads.

I have been doing a lot of reading and the single 1.5 inch return will provide more flow with less restriction. I belive it has to do with the total area of the pipe being more then 2 1” pipe and the extra resistance from the split and extra fittings. Trying to get as close to 10x turn over as I can. I could be wrong and then in the future I’ll split it down to two 1” returns.

@jschlem - Thank you for the kind words. It was great to meet you and your family and the dog, wish you lived closer.

You have my cell number, and if any major issues come up your only 3 hours away.

Hats off also for tearing down and rebuilding every three years and to your wife supporting the larger tank!!

I've never paid much attention to the whole "x turnover" thing but I do know that turnover through the sump and turnover within the tank are wholly different things. With powerheads in the tank you can have tons of flow within the tank but a much slower flow through the sump. Restricting the returns a bit may not be a big worry. But a single return is certainly simpler! One less hole to drill, bulkhead to worry about, Tee to organize... can't fault any of that!

Well it has been a slow go finishing up plumbing and leak test again, then break it all down and move it inside. But I can finally say that it has been moved inside and is ready for water. I have started working on the equipment cabinet and went crazy on Black Friday. Bought the 2016 apex extra eb832, leak detection kit, and kamoer fx pump for calcium reactor. I have also bought the random flow generator nozzle and I am impressed with it’s performance.
I started rock work with some shelf rock and dry live rock but still have 90ish lbs from my 93 to put in on top.

The rock is still white so far I have not been running my lights much. I have about 90 lbs left from my 93 cube that is still up and running for a few more weeks. I have finished most of the apex setup and cord management. I am going to have to send out my mp60 for a longer cord. It is about 2 feet short for where the controllers are going. Skimmer, calcium reactor, refugium are all up and running. Looking to trade my old xr15 pro for a h380. I still need to make a skin for the stand and canopy to help block the light it is making. But so far so good.

I set up a reverse check valve on the top of the tank for the return, because my return was too low in the water and would get a lot of water in my sump due to siphon. Under the sump there is no valve that is a union you are seeing for flexibility and ease of use.

The tank has been running well. But I have struggled with some brown web like cyano/or dino. I was to the point that when I put my arm in the tank, my hairs would be covered with brown crap almost instantly. I added filter socks. Tried chemiclean and that worked for a little while then tried a three day black out and that work for a while. I did notice that my Nitrate and phosphate where undetectable and have since started dosing/ feeding heavy, and removed most of the marine pure cubes. This has made the largest improvement in just a few short days. Lost a few of the newer fish, most of the corals survived the battle so far. I lost a few sps due to the crap covering them and maybe from the chemiclean/ black outs.
I am adding a manifold run off an Vectra m1 to feed the carbon reactor/gfo, the calcium rx( not really necessary at this time), I am adding a 50watt pentair UV, and a possible chiller in the future. I will take some picture of it when I'm finished.

Not a lot of room left in the sump. Took way longer then I would have liked to fit it and I messed up gluing the wrong pieces twice. But so far not leaks and everything it working right.

Finally was able to put a skin on the bare metal. The baby was pulling herself up and playing with the tubes and wires. I found a good deal on pvc board at Lowe’s. I just used Velcro to attach. Still working to find some trim pieces for the corners and around the tank. So much better already. It helps with all the light spillage. I think it is 100% better then with out.
