when you get your rock plan on budgeting for aquascaping; cement, lots of super glue (thin & thick), sand either for hiding seams or the bottom. Also take it from me, urchins and pre-painted purple rocks don’t mix.

You will have to check your 90 gallon for pipe sizing.

DIY Sump on the cheap:

29 gallon Petco Aqueon ( or 20 gallon if you can't fit the 29 gallon height) = $29 (during $1 / gallon sale)
12" x 12" ceramic tile from Home Depot for baffles 4 @ .49 = 4
Tube of 100 % Silicone Caulk est. = 5
Total = $38

For the 29 gallon sump, you won't even have to cut the tile, and you'll still have 6 inches of space above the tile to handle unexpected overflows e.g. during power outages.

Place the baffles based on how you intend to use the different sections of the sump ( skimmer, refugium, filter media, etc)

Might not look as pretty as commercial products, but effective. The tile is much cheaper than glass or plastic. It's 1/4 inch thick and a little heavier, but it works. I'm very satisfied with mine.

yes, the same stuff you put on floors. While some is more expensive, you can always find some very cheap on the shelf. Made from fired clay plus some type of glaze (porcelain, ceramic) on top. Its just a cheap easy alternative to glass. It is not as brittle as glass, but it will break. You can score it with a tile cutter and break it along the score line if the 12 x 12 size doesn't work for you. The tiles are actually about 1/8 inch less than 12 inches to allow for a grout line. Works perfect in a 20 long or 29 gallon tank.

neither have I, thought I'd give it a shot after I was told custom cut glass would cost me $5 a pane

Can't say with absolute certainty without knowing precisely what is in the tile purchased, but I think it's highly unlikely. The primary ingredient is the same clay used for clay flowerpots which are use often for breeding egg laying fish or for caves, particularly freshwater fish. Also has sand, feldspar and talc as common ingredients. I've used rocks picked up off the shore line, or from mountainous terrains for years without problems and if anything I think the simplicity of the tile production process would make them even more inert than untested rock.

I wouldn't have thought about that either. I would have been worried about it leaching something unknown over time, but I know a lot of people use flowerpots (like was stated). But a reef system is far more sensitive than the freshwater tank scenario. I ended up plumbing my 90G into the basement. I was tired of the close quarters under the tank with a mixture of a lot of electronics.

The biggest sump you can put under the DT, without, deconstructing stand.
Big box depot schedule 40 standard white pipe and fittings. Hard plumb is better.
Gate valves (not ball valves) on each overflow (gates allow for the fine tuning)
Jebao DCQ-10000 lph, return pump, or similar, I use Jebao for everthing and have no problem
Two 200 watt heaters, one Inkbird temp controller.
Two, Visparspectra 165watt, black box.

Hi Sir... May i know how many and how big pipe do you use for plumbing in overflow box? And how big pipe do you use for 10000 lph return?

For our 90G, we used a 20L as a sump. For the 180, it's a 40B. DIY glass panes and plumbing depends on your tank. Our 90G we did a durso overflow, hard plumbed. 180, we have dual herbie over flows, hard plumbed. Our 90G wasn't a corner tank so idk how that would affect anything. Our best friend has a standard 90 as well, his is durso overflow and hard plumbed into a 29 tank as a sump, I believe.

I matched the overflow pipes that were preinstalled in the DT.
I have two 1” overflows so I maintained this size from water to sump.
Going back in, I am 1” again all the way up to the tank, then I had to reduce to 3/4” as this what is preinstalled.
My sump is 16 feet below my DT.
Hopefully that helps.
