Hi All!

I am starting to set up a list for the Red Sea Reefer 250 that will be starting to cycle in the next few weeks, and wanted to get some advice on the fish that I plan on putting in the tank alongside mainly soft corals. :)

It is my first ever reef tank so I have tried to put together a list of fish that are generally easier to keep, and then move into more complex fish further down the line when my tank is fully established.

Planned Fish List:
2 x Ocellaris Clownfish
1 x Royal Gramma
1 x FireFish
1 x Goby/Pistol Shrimp Pair

Plus clean up crew.

I was just wondering how many fish would be recommended to keep in the tank, and if anyone had any advice on any fish they would recommend for a first time reefer! I also like the thought of keeping a Mandarin Dragonet but I know this won't be for quite a while until the reef tank is fully up and running.

Thanks in advance for any advice/recommendations! :)

Of course I have room for 1 more fish!

Your stock list fine. Good choices for that size tank.

I don’t feel that size tank will support a mandarin with pods unless you supplement the regularly.

Add the clowns last if possible.

Let them all settle in and see how your nutrient control is working.

That will help you determine if you can handle more fish.

Welcome and congrats on getting started in the hobby. Your list looks fine and should be a good start. Make the most out of 'live aquaria' website if you haven't already. They are generally accurate when it comes to fish info including requirements, temperament and tank sizing.

Mandarins are truly stunning fish and a joy to keep with the right knowledge and work. I'm glad your waiting till your system is more mature and your skills have evolved to keep one. I will say this which goes against popular belief in regard to mandarins I have successfully keep mandarins thriving in tanks as small as 15g while there are standard views on fish, nothing is set in stone and a good aquarist will know their limitations and what's best for their fish health. I had a long time nearly 10 years in reefing before successfully keeping mandarins.

So long story short develope your skills and experience, learn from your mistakes and while standardize allocations are given you will see that many things that should and shouldn't happen can often change in this hobby. Don't limit yourself but learn and continue to grow

generally the rule is 1 inch of fish to 5 gallons of saltwater so 3cm to 2oL

yellow tangs are good if you can QT them, blennys are always fun
I like dwarf angels but there is a risk of them nipping coral it depends fish to fish

I've got two Mandarins in my 30G and they are going good the key is getting them when they are already fat
