Smack the tank with hard doses of Vibrant to clear the algae problem.

The fact you have melting zoas and algae tells me you have a nutrient problem. Likely zero phosphate being sucked up by the algae.

Since its a kids tank I would avoid corals and just make it fish only. Get a skimmer and bump the water changes up. When the tank clears up then maybe consider adding some soft coral.

So it has a finer mess screen top on it but still possible however he usually doesn’t mess with the tank. He usually stands there and stares at it when he first comes home then leaves it be
I know you said usually doesn't... But that doesn't mean always. Check this thread...
