How are you planning on getting water flow through the bio-balls and GFO?
I think maybe there's just a line there for the tray that will hold the filter Floss or whatever he is putting in there.

If he's running bags for the carbon and GFO, I suppose that could work. Setting Bio-balls in a tray will probably clog quite fast though with all the detritus discharging directly into them.

How much flow do you plan to run through it? You may want to incorporate some form of a bubble trap after refugium before return to prevent micro bubbles from any cascading water into the return section. Nice looking design though. I like it. And I agree with no bio balls. Just rock rubble should suffice for bio filter.
