If you need to regulate the water going into the tank you'll put the valve on the line going from the pump back to the tank. If you have room in your stand, under the tank above the sump it will be out of the way but still accessible. DO NOT restrict the water going into the pump by putting the valve before the return pump. Can you determine where the actual noise is coming from? I'm assuming it's a sucking or slurping noise?
Please thank you. It's very "slurpy". . Could be normal. Idk. I literally bought the sump and overflow on a whim with a pump super cheap and headed to home depot. After a bunch of saltwater in my mouth and on the floor I got it going until I ran into trouble and started this thread ..

something else to consider with this kind of set up:

If the power were to go out and your siphon breaks. then turns back on, how will the siphon start back up? will your pump continue to put water into the tank even if no water is leaving the tank back into the sump. There are other hang on the back Sump/ Skimmer combos that are set up to "restart" in such a situation.

This is a very good point. I had a hob overflow box that had spot on it to connect a separate air pump that helped it start and maintain a siphon after power outages.

I had to look that up def no, would be nice
Could it be possible that the pump is running dry in the sump due to evaporation.

Depending on the size of the tank, you can lose 3-5L a day with evaporation, that is enough for the pump to run dry.
