Ok i have a 120 gallon dual overflow tank with a Trigger Systems 36 Ruby Red Sump. Last night i was playing with my sump levels and marked off the spot with return pump on and return pump off.

My question is how fast does evaporation happen? Not sure if my water is just evaporation or the if the return pump is carrying just a tad bit more water then the drain is draining

This pic below shows the bottom mark with tape. The water line was at the top of this piece of tape at 12:00am. This morning at 10:00am which is 10 hours later the water has dropped to almost the bottom of the tape.

RETURN or EVAPORATION? I have a tunze auto top off just want to get water stable before adding it.

Evaporation. If your pump was pushing water to your display faster than your drains could drain it, the water level in your display would rise as your sump level would decrease. So, if the water level in the display didn't go up... or down, evaporation. There's no need to wait to install your ATO, by not using it your salinity is probably swinging like crazy. You could get a definite answer if you measured salinity at each tape mark, i'm sure you'll see a difference. I have an 80G system and it uses about 7-8 gallons of fresh water a week. This will vary depending on your wave maker, lights, system size, etc. Typically the larger the system, the more ATO water you'll go through.

Evaporation. The rates of evaporation change depending on the humidity of the air but it's quite possible for this rate.

evaporation. The air conditioner and heater in your house will also make a difference in evap. Along with whether or not you have a covered tank or open. this is in addition to the things mentioned above. Put in the ATO it will make your life easier and your tank happier.

Evaporation, I use @ 6-7G a week on a 68G open rimless. I have allot of surface movement so my evaporation is higher but tank temps are solid and corals love the flow.
