Because, if the HOB ever loses siphon (and they can), there will be nowhere for the water returning from your sump to go - except overflowing the tank and onto your floor. I have never used one, but I have had to baby sit one (135 gallon) a couple of times for a friend of mine when he went out of town. Both times he left me responsible for it, the tank overflowed. HUGE mess. With a drilled overflow, that won't happen. That said, people still continue to use them and while it may work for you most of the time, it is a risk that is really unnecessary these days.

That's not always the case. I have HOB and if you shut the power off it stops. I have the KollerCraft TOM RP3 Overflow Box. It is rated for up to 150g. It self primes. I have had the older one for several years without any problems. But that's just me.

I would drill the back. Usually the back isn't tempered. I would then use a 30-36" long sump of the brand of your choice lots of good ones out there. Me personally I went with bashsea.

Just upgraded to a 90 gallon tank. What size sump would you all suggest? I definitely want a refugium section also. Tank can't be drilled so I'm ping to have to go with an overflow box. Also, what size return pump and overflow would you recommend?i am thinking I need 800 Gph turnover. I've never had a sump before so it's all new to me. Any ideas, etc. much appreciated.

I have a Red Sea Reefer 425 which is 90 gallons. Worth checking the sump dimensions that come with is.
I use a TMC Reef Pump 4000 litres/hour (uk) brilliant pump and can adjust flow to suit

For recommendations - what everyone really needs to know first is how much space do you have? If it is going under the tank in the stand, how what kind of length, width, and height do you have? Also, you asked about a return pump, so I assume you don't already have one - do you already have a skimmer, and if so, what kind is it (so that we know the dimensions needed to fit it)?

I should have asked this one before also - is your tank already full? You mentioned the front door of your stand only gives you 21" - so is the tank full or can it be moved off of the stand and a larger sump lowered in from the top?

Just full of water and some rock? Or full of sand, rock, coral, fish, etc?

Yeah - that will definitely complicate things and limit your choices. Eshopps makes a Medium Cube sump that is 18x18 and then their ADV-100 is 24x14x16. It is possible that'd you'd be able to angle the ADV-100 in there - if it were me, I'd find or make something out of cardboard with similar dimensions and see if I could wedge it in there. Also - I only mention Eshopps because I use the 3rd Generation ADV-200 on my 90g and have really liked it.

Once you determine sump, then everyone can make return and skimmer suggestions for you too.
