Please keep telling your stories, they make me smile.
Orla in Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you Orla from Ireland. I think thats the farthest away anyone ever told me that and I appreciate it even though this thread isn't much about fish.

(My next door neighbor comes from Ireland and still has a house there) 😎

Excuse me, and I don't want to sound rude but is Orla a girls name or a boys name? I never heard the name before. Not that it matters, I just like to know who I am speaking with. My wife's name is Dale and that can be a Man or a Woman. But she is all women, she told me so. 😎

I can't write too much about the fish because they are just there doing whatever they are supposed to do and rarely have any problems, and if they do, they caused them themselves as I take no responsibility for their actions. 😳

So a couple of weeks ago replaced all 5 smoke detectors in my house as they were 8 years old and I figured it was time.

This morning at 3:30 I was quickly and brutally awakened by all four of them going:

BEEP...BEEP...BEEP...FIRE...FIRE...FIRE...BEEP...BEEP...FIRE...FIRE
Etc.

I get up early but not generally at 3:30. I normally get out of bed at 5:15 or so to go on my Manly, dark, cold walk through the wilderness (street) and down to the churning and angry sea (Long Island Sound) where I mingle with the dangerous and terrifying creatures that lurk there. (seagulls)

I like to get up by the gently sounds of a mountain stream, the rustle of a breeze through the willows or my wife whispering in my ear: "Love of my life, you don't have to wash the floors today".

I checked around the house to smell for smoke and after not finding any, I took down the 3, still blaring detectors in my living area upstairs.

This wasn't as easy as it sounds because my new replacement shoulder doesn't like me to raise my arm straight up yet, not even if the house is on fire.

I could still hear the last detector downstairs in my "very cool and Manly Man cave" so I had to go down and check. I am running around in my "speedo" and it is 22 degrees outside so I didn't want any of the Ladies to catch a glimpse of me or they may want to follow me into my Man cave and do things like, help me feed the fish or worse.

I thought for a moment and realized I didn't have any firefish or flame angels but I do have two Fireclowns. Could they have spontaneously burst into flames?

I got my coat on and ran downstairs. I'm old so I don't run that fast, but I got there and opened the door. No smoke. No fire. No flood. I looked in the tank and the two fireclowns were just mating, something they have been doing for the 35 years I have them.

Now I have to see what I can do to slow down their lovemaking so I can get some sleep. 🙄

And today we are having a house full of people for dinner and I have to make bread, clam chowder and a seafood pasta dish.

Some of the new detectors are too sensitive and detect things other than smoke i suspect. A customer of mine had theirs start going off at 1:30-2:00 A.M. every morning for no apparent reason, and I just installed them last winter.
I cant stop staring at the wall art behind the table and the reflection, they belong together!

That painting, which I did not paint, was very cheap. When we moved here we needed something for that wall while I figured what I wanted to make for there. I never got around to it, so that painting is still there.

I also think so. So I dropped it in my reef tank right next to the urchin to see if it is less sensitive there. 😬

2:00am this morning, 5 hours ago:

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP

If I had my shotgun near me I would have had to blow my brains out.
I don't know why these new detectors have a need to give me a heart attack at night.

I ran and got a ladder, reached up to twist the thing off the ceiling so I could throw it out the window, as I got with in two inches from it. It stopped.

I think they are possessed.

The medical profession has entered your mind through an implant and that is their way of making you do physio and can check your progress. Be careful what you say or think

Sometimes water vapor can set them off!
Yes, I know, and there is an awful lot of water vapor in my Man cave with my tank there and a whole lot of plants.

But that stuff has been there for 8 years and there have been no problems. I just think these Chinese-made smoke detectors are trying to drive Veterans crazy. I am not sure why. 🙄

I don't understand these tests that many people get from Aquabiometrics to see if they have disease organisms in the tank. If they did that test in natural seawater all those diseases would be present like they are supposed to be and have been since we kept trilobites in wine barrels. The presence of different parasites and bacteria doesn't mean anything, since all healthy fish (in the sea) carry them. Maybe it's me because I like a natural, healthy, long-lived tank. I am going to eat worms. 🤢

My tank is running well, I don't hardly mess with it because I have other, more important things to do but I think it needs some calcium as I have a montipora that is bleaching. I rarely put in hard corals because I really don't test and just want an easy, no-maintenance tank, which I kind of have.

I am not really interested much in corals anymore and concentrate on fish health and longevity.

As I keep saying, I have not lost a fish from any of the diseases I see on these forums in many decades and I have never de-wormed a fish or cleaned one of flukes or anything else. I don't dip, observe, or medicate any fish, and I don't lose any during my very short acclimation. They are all happy, healthy, and many are spawning.

At my age, I am thrilled I don't have to go through all that nonsense. 🆒

I have enough trouble taking care of my wife. 😕

Now I am going to sit back, put on some Righteous Brothers oldies and relax. It's too early to sip Grand Marnier. 🥴

That makes ...actually more reefers than most think on here.

We are not alone my friend but most are around our age. You see we were doing what we do before the Internet influences appeared in their numbers. Before the big company's brought out what seems like hundreds of bottles of potions to cure a none problem.

In Germany using the Berlin method, live rock, kalkwasser HQI lighting and a skimmer were growing and cultivating Acropora corals. They still do of course. Things might get tweaked light LEDs instead of HQI lamps but the basic principles and practice remains much as it did back then.

Something changed, and not all for the better. The younger generation have been duped and indoctrinated into these thou must methods of QT and medication. They often ignoring the more natural way of keeping fish healthy. No money in that see and to be successful you have to spend a lot of money apparently on the must haves in the hobby.

Thankfully, we were born in a era of experimentation DIY and exploration. We found out by trial and error with nobody to tell us that won't work or it's not possible.

Atoll, I find it fascinating that so many people go through this and after all of that, most of them still have disease issues. This seems so easy. I really like reading about all these disease issues when we both know, it is just silly.

But if there were no disease problems, there would be no forums because that is the meat of these forums. 🙄
