tank chip

One of my friends hit my tank with some kind of stone and i would like to repair, another guy told me to buy lack Electro-Static Paint 1/2" Aluminum Angle Extrusion on amazon and black silicon or glue.... so i need help.... maybe its another option to fix this, the picture is atached

Sorry that happened to you. That is a nasty looking chip. The thing with glass is you never really know if (or when) that chip might run and crack your tank. I am not really sure that you can repair that and be confident that it will hold permanently. I do wish you luck though.

I would contact the manufacturer and see if they have any ideas on it. That would make me a little uneasy. A catastrophic failure is my biggest fear with a tank.

Agreed...maybe contact the manufacturer for recommendations. My initial thought is it likely is not repairable, other than replacing the panel. At least in the pictures, it appears the crack/chip made its way to the silicone/seal. That is a recipe for disaster. But I tend to error on the side of caution.

That’s a rough looking chip. It would make me very uneasy having that box of water in my house. I would plan for the worst and start looking at new tanks. Good time to upgrade ;)

Putting my engineering hat on, the issue is the local stress risers, assuming the remaining material is significant enough to carry the load on the pane (looks like it probably is). Only thing I could think of that is as crazy as it sounds would to be to blend out the damaged section. That would in some ways be like drilling and leave only smooth, large radius contours on the surface. The small, tight, tiny cracks are the real issue. That sharp turn in the edge lends itself to high stress concentrations and is what tends to propagate.

As others said, worrying about a split would be the fear. I don't think any amount of angle aluminum and adhesive will correct the internal stress concentrations in the glass. They might help carry the edge load and remove some force from the damaged section but you would need some kind of horizontal brace to take the load that causes the flexing out of the glass pane and that would be ugly as heck.

While it might not be popular, you could just live with it until you can afford a new tank. If its not rimless, make sure the top bracing is in good shape and all.

That is a nasty chip. Only a Buddy does stuff like that ,always ! LOL
Anyway how big is the tank? If it's a large tank that means more weight ,more pressure pushing outward. I smaller tank, less pressure. Again that's a good chunk missing.
I personally would pack it with black epoxy. The silicone is black right?

ouch,that's why I don't have friends lol.as you read above ya got three choices.buy a new tank,try to repair it or live with it.$1000 now, i'll pass.fix it and as skep18 said probably won't be very effective.live with,well I have a chip in my 200 bottom middle from the manufacturer.been up and running for 5 years.my buddy has a 300 same crack same manufacturer same place.i know what are the odds.he's been up and running for 9 years.we have lived with them with no issues.i will say every time I think I hear water trickling that's the first place I think of and the first place i look.for total piece of mind ya got to spend a $1000.otherwise keep a shop vac close by and pray to the reef gods.

You need a new friend, but not until after you get the guys home insurance info to see if he has coverage. I’d be taking something out of his pocket to fix/replace, since it’s his responsibility.

Oh that's a good sized chip, I have not had anything like that, but I have had 2 complete tank sort of failers one the 55 blue the front bottom seem it drained in 1 1/2 minutes the other was a 30 gallon had it running for 15 years and left 2 large puppy's alone they knocked it over. If I were you I would think about replacing it, even 10 gallons is a lot of water on your floor

Not sure what you mean, do you mean like the stuff they do to car windshields? Because it's in a corner I think it would ruin the silicone and the tank would have to be empty

Hello,

As others have stated, that’s a pretty significant chip in that glass pain. Nobody really knows what will happen, we can only guess as about as well as you can.

Some options as some as stated, you could upgrade and buy a new tank. You could try and epoxy it, but that won’t stop any of the small cracks from expanding. To be honest experiencing Naoh’s ark in my living room lol isn’t something I’m too thrilled about. As much as it’s painfuk, I would suggest a new tank, and or contact the manufacturer. Yet, they are probably gonna say, the obvious, you need a new tank. I know some of my close friends, they realize how nice my tank, and what it means to me. If they broke I’m certain they would help fix and or replace it. Good luck to you.
