Happy Friday y’all. Doing a tank transfer from my 180g in the basement to a 120g in my living room. Finished plumbing today. My friend and I were discussing, How long should I wait to add new SPS to the system? I am using new substrate, transferring water and some of the rock. He said 6 months, seems long for a reef addict.

Thanks

I would start adding corals when your new tank is stable. Consistent alk, phosphate, nitrate, etc. Every system is different so time is not the best way judge. If you transfer enough rock it could be ready right away.

Thanks man. I think they will. I was more curious about new frags. I imagine it would be relatively quick. My friend said 6 months but that’s crazy lol

I'm about to transfer a Reefer 425 G2+ over to a Waterbox (same size tank). I'd LIKE to move everything out of the current tank, and swap the new tank in it's place so the lighting, sump, etc can stay in place. SO the question..WHAT do you guys use to transfer the water (88G) and fish/coral out to? I priced large Brutes but it would be a one time purchase I'd (hopefully) never use again.

I use a stock tank and brute cans that I normally use for water changes.

I like this stock tank, its not to big or expensive and is great to cycle rock in or a temporary holding tank if you have some kind of problem.

Any large tubs that are cleaned out that can hold water will work. I've used tons of 5 gallons, coolers, etc.
Don't worry about transferring the water. Make new as there is minimal beneficial bacteria in the column itself.

I have the exact same tub as @fushi. Great for many uses, including if you ever have a tank emergency and have to throw fish into something fast. I keep it out in the garage when not in use.

Second the quick transfer. Move as much live rock as possible. If I knew this was coming I would buy a large amount of biomedia and leave it in the existing sump for a month or so, then move than media to the new sump.
