I'm currently on municipal supplied water and I use an ion exchange water softener for the entire house because the water in my area is extremely hard. The way i understand it is the water softener exchanges calcium ions for sodium ions and this is the water i'll run through an RODI.
My question is around lab testing the water leaving the softener and again, leaving the RODI. My main concern is if there will be anything in the DI water after its processed. I'm thinking for along the lines of organics or in-organics that I cannot test for. I hear alot about 0 TDS but what else could be in there that should be filtered out before it goes in the tank.

TIA,

P

IMO, it is risky to use tap water.

I would test water from the tap water you hope to collect it for a reef, not where it exits the softener, since copper from your own plumbing is one of the biggest risks.

Many reef icp companies will test tap water in a more detailed way than drinking water and filter companies.

isnt that what most people do? Run tap water trough an RODI, mix in salt, and add to the aquarium?

Yes. But a water softener is entirely different. It’s great to use an ro/di after the softener.

Yes,, that was my plan. Tap water -> softener -> RODI -> mixing tank. Is there anything that could "potentially" get past the RODI that I need to be concerned about with this setup?

Thanks in advance :)

You’re welcome.

Happy Reefing. :)
I had a fowlr back in the late '80s. I used tap water and it was fine. Did 2o% water changes every 3-4 weeks. That was in Calgary and the city water came out of the Bow river, which came out of the rocky mountains. I guess I got lucky cuz I won't be doing that ever again :)
