testing for stray voltage

hi when i test for stray voltage on a digital voltmeter i set the dial to v~ correct and put the black to a grounded outlet and red to the tank water.my question is what reading should i get on the meter my reading i know salt water conducts electricity but what should it be reading.my readings are all over.everything is fine in the tank just curious.

Correct, you stick the black in the Ground of the outlet... red to tank...

If your getting a reading, shut off stuff to see whats causing it...

My 90g gets a reading of less then 1 volt.... my 120g SPS tank was reading over 37 volts, come to find out my bad Sicce pump is leaking voltage in the tank... (my fault not Sicce!!)
