Hey reefer!!
Im Robert this is my first thread but not my first build. Here a little background or the 411 about me. I have doing this for a bout 3 or 4 years. I have upgraded my tank about 4 times. It so addicted!!! I cant help it. Right now I have the 56g and the 10g but I want to do more tank so my friend and I decided it was okay to set up at his apt along with his 40b. What an awesome friend he is right? This build is going to be little slow due to $$$$. This set up is going to be 40b Sps dom going minimalist style. This build is going to be different because there be two 40b connect to another 40b(sump). What am I hoping to achieve this? Having enough flow to eliminate the need of the ugly powerhead sticking out in the in the tank and have good coral growth and not to mention see how quiet can the overflow be without the box. This 40b will be drilled for three holes. One hole will be the overflow bulkhead and the two other will be the return. As far as light im still debating on going the D.I.Y or get the plug and play lights fixture same as for the skimmer. So here is the tank slowly progressing. So here the pics

Looks good so far. Are you using a strainer on the inside? Also, most use a PVC cap on the durso with a hole drilled and for better controllability, you can use a RO valve. They are normally white and blue.
Keep us updated

Ok dorky asked me to fill in some spots here.

I am the wonderful friend he mentioned in the beginning. I currently have a 40b show with 40b refuge(not a sump cause well nothing but a heater and some rock in it).

We are adding on a 40b to the right side of the current setup and plumbing it all together. Running two return pumps so that each tank is adjustable and doesn't lose return flow due to the other.

Because he wants to go with minimal rock and structure in this build we are using rock in the sump to make this work.

The tank is not finished quite yet because it still needs a strainer on the "down tube". (Bulk reef supply is currently out of stock of the 1" )

The lights will be brighter than the 150watt k2 viper mh that I am running on the current setup so that sps can be grown better.
Going by the old rule of thumb of 4-5watts per gallon is not easy while working on a budget but if we go with LEDs then we don't have to stick with 4-5 watts per gallon because I don't want to cook everything with light(sunburn)

To answer a question I remember reading before writing this

Yes there will be a strainer on the down tube.

Yes there is a cap on the air side(behind the tank) for the down tub and it has an air line through it so not to make crazy sounds.

I am open for questions and will subscribe to this build so please ask and we will answer them with haste and glory.

Thanks.

Ps maybe a little less glory than haste.

This is a great setup! Look the minimalist rock work. I am envisioning the sps colonies on the mini island on the left and it looks amazing. It will be awesome to see the fish swimming around the island and through the tunnel. Strong work!
