Ok must have been the photo. I’ll get a pic of mine to show. I think mine is at about 8” as well. How open do you have it? I have the dot at about two I think. It skims wet for me like that.

Ok here’s pics of my skimmer. Where the water level in the sump is and how the blue knob is set. One thing I can’t tell with yours is how the “T” is positioned. If you notice on the part of the “T” that goes into the skimmer, it has a slight angle to it. The long part of the angle goes on the top.

Here is how deep the water is, I believe same as yours.

You're ok. The grass can be replaced! Pretty darn lucky considering how it could have been.

When I covered the air intake to pump it cleared the bubbles out of the skimmer. I did break the venture and super glued the airline back to it. Maybe that’s my issue. I’m going to break it in longer and see what happens. I’ll text the seller
