Good afternoon from a frantic mayor wizard,



Two VERY Unexpected Guests

Sooooo.... I have a tiny BIG problem, I ordered a pair of Mandarins for my Mixed reef tank as its well established with pods and other critters coming up on two year mark on that build. Well I got them from Dr Reef and they are captive bred mandarins being I asked for a PAIR i thought they would be paired up as a couple not just one male and one female however these guys are insanely small. Like big as my thumbnail small. So Its probably not a good idea but they will be staying in the Kingdom until they get a bit bigger.

I am kind of disappointed I'm not sure how they can be even sexed at this size... let alone to be sold as a "pair" as I do not think they use hermaphroditism. and as much as I can tell I have two females. I dont see any spiked fin.

Also if you think they will be fine in my big tank please let me know otherwise they will be staying inthe kingdom suite until bigger IF they survive ( gonna try my best) its just they are so small I don't think they will make it. I only have small blue leg hermits/pitho crabs in there a large foxface and tangs.



So I am going to be going straight after work and getting pods phyto and baby brine as the smallest food I have is PE calanus and they didnt seem interested in it. also putting in a order to start my pod and phyto culture earlier than anticipated. Good thing Im a bookmark hoarder for amazon

Oh my, they are small! I don't have an answer for your question about sexing or if they'll be okay in the big tank, but it wouldn't hurt to reach out to Dr. Reef and ask him how he sexed them, and if he can give you an appropriate timeline for them to grow into a respectful size.
