I have finally gotten my tank. I’ve been into the hobby since 9th grade and that was 5 years ago. I’m excited to document my tank here and hope I have plenty of success. First pics below.

P.S: Yeah... I know it’s next to the electric panel. My dad chose the spot not me. I did angle it away so it’s about 3 to 5 ft away from it.

Here are pics of everything. Can someone also let me know if this is too much flow. I have an Aquaclear 70 on the right and a hydor koralia 240 on the left. The Ricordea is kind of moving but I know it likes lower flow.

New additions to the tank. 2 Astrea and 2 trochus snails have been employed to combat the ugly phase.
The current stocking is now
2 hermits
2 Astrea
2 trochus

Nice looking tank!! And welcome to R2R :)
If you don’t mind me asking a question do you know what type of thing is in my trochus snail? It’s the little white blotch at the bottom of the shell. Also one of my Astrea snails are spinning, is that normal?

Tuesday, January 5:

Alright we finally got some more corals in the tank I added in 3 gamers and 1 acan. All of these I got from the cherry corals live sale and one of the hammers was $5 so that was my biggest steal. Right now they’re acclimating so pics won’t have light.

Wednesday, January 6:
Got so more coral into the tank today. This time they came from the ARC livesale. This was the first livesale I participated in and it was an absolute blast. Managed to snag 7 corals in total. 5 different types of zoanthids (ARC Mickey D’s, WWC Tasers, Red Hornets, Punk Rockers, TSA Hellboys) and two Favia/Favities. I got lucky and managed to snag the tasers for five bucks. Hopefully everything thing will be ok. I know zoanthids like dirtier water but my problem is that my nitrates are really low right now so I’m hoping they don’t melt away.

Been though a lot since the last update. Some of my corals, specifically zoanthids weren’t looking to hot and I could only say they started to melt or something. I hadn’t seen them open for about a month. Only livestock loss was one trochus snail that was probably pretty old.

Added a few peppermint shrimp to deal with aiptasia and they either decimated most of them, they weee pretty small, or the aiptasia started to hide. I really don’t see anymore aiptasia in the tank though. If your on the fence about these guys I’d suggest you give them a try. If your I the central Ohio area I got mine from Rivers to Reefs. Both times I bought peppermint shrimp from they they ended up dong their job. They also leave the corals alone so that’s a plus as well.

Saturday, May 14: The Bad, the Bad… and some slightly less bad-
Okay so… one year later and I lost A LOT. All zoas, spa, and all but 3 LPS currently remain. Now my journey to replinish what I had lost had begun. Join me… and witness the growth of a new era like no one has seen before (ok lemme stop I seem weird) For the newbies looking at this you can most definitely learn from my mistakes.

I’ve basically chocked my losses down to 2 or 3 things. ONE- as soon as I got my first batch of corals I ended getting a purple hammer that immediately brown jellied and spat tissue everywhere. I was slow to remove it and didn’t know I had to remove the tissue. This slowly led to it infecting every other LPS over a 4 month period. TWO- my second oopsie definitely came from a carpet anemone that spat it’s guts and soon after a lot of stuff started to go. My zoas and sps immediately got worse and THREE- were definitely my peppermint shrimp. They did do their job and eviscerated every last aiptasia I had within a week but they also bothered my corals and specifically the anemone to no end. No amount of feeding left them satisfied and their reign of terror lasted until they both randomly disappeared.

I was a very very very broke college student and wasn’t able to afford to put anything in to replace what I had but now I’m only a semi very broke college student and I have the time to actually focus on my reef and I wanna definitely have pics up that will impress people so look forward to new updates to come. Pics up tomorrow.
