I've never used an external skimmer but I believe they all need a feed pump. You can run it internal, you just need to have a feed pump for it that can be submerged. Or tee off your return pump.

I'd send a message to CoralVue (US distributor for Reef Octopus) for help. I retrofitted a DC pump on my older in-sump model skimmer with their help (they got me an adapter.)
