The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

The second step is hanging out with a bunch of enablers. Am I right? That’s how this works right?
Haha we are a bunch of enablers! We all have build threads that are wrasse dominated come join us you'll fit right in!

Some of us have riskier gangs than others haha

Lol. The first step is admitting you have a problem right. Haha.

Yeah for sure but starting with a list that gives the best chance of success helps. Setting up for failure definitely doesn’t help you enjoy the hobby. Ha

So non sand sleepers are more aggressive.
Not more aggressive. Wrasse that sleep in sand don’t seem to care as much about other wrasse and they tend to deal with bullying more. I call fairy’s and flashers millennials. They tend to be bully’s but then sulk from stress. I love them all but learn towards wrasse that sleep in sand. Each their own

My nearest LFS just got a 2"+ Mystery Wrasse. It's my wife's dream fish and the price is right. The problem is ... where to put it?

I've currently got a 60g running that's in a good place aggression wise but my (still fairly small) Naso Tang, Singapore Angel, and Neon Dottyback usually pick on new comers. This tank will be transferred to a 125g in the next few months (hopefully) and the Mystery Wrasse would be in there eventually.

I have a NUVO 40 AIO in my office at work with two clowns, two mollies, and a firefish. I feel like this could be a good place for a Mystery to go for now but I am a little worried about my cleaner shrimp (big), emerald crab (really big), and scarlet hermit crab.

We are also setting up a JBJ 28 gallon AIO to which we'll be transferring the rock and coral from a 15g that is absolutely crawling with pods. I could maybe rush this along, but I'm not sure if the tank will be big enough.

Any thoughts?

This is just based off my experience with a mystery wrasse I had for a couple years. They play nice at first but then there’s a switch that goes off and the aggression starts.
I would not recommend putting them in with a fire fish in your 40 AIO. Especially if it’s a larger mystery wrasse. Your best shot is the future 125 even though there’s a chance you’re dotty back and the mystery wrasse won’t get along. Not to mention any fish especially wrasses that you put in after him will probably not fare well. Sorry for all the negativity but just want to give you what I experienced.

The other tanks you mentioned are way too small. These guys might like hanging around the rocks but they swim constantly.

Hope this helps.

To me yes. Non sand sleepers will drawl the line how many and will kill off the others. Tried so many times to get one more but they wouldn’t have it. Sand sleepers are so much more chill.
Because of wrasse I want to start selling fish. Why because I want people to have healthy fish ready for tanks but more important I want them all for me.

So you will raise emotional pet wrasses for others? Will they come with their little red vests?

I would like to but man seems fish from collection are dirty lately. TSM not the same without Mat but they are doing mostly captive bred fish because of the shape of fish being sent from other sources. I know two others that stopped qting fish and one stopped selling fish all together because of losses.

not only red vest but bubble wrap and helmets to keep them safe

Have you tried Marine Collectors? Elliot does a pretty good job diagnosing and qt’ing fish. Links you my main guy stopped doing at as well. Said it was way too much stress. I’m guessing that means fish losses.

No Elliot told me a couple years ago he won’t touch fish I want. Mostly leopards so I deal with it myself. I get fish direct mostly. Just collection don’t even seem to care some of what I see. Also who you are depends on what you get. Not all collection is the same it seems

That’s true he doesn’t have any leopard wrasse availability. Another vendor I’ve been doing some research on is School of Fish. Owner seems pretty cool and he carries a ton of high end fish. Decent conditioning protocol as well. All good reviews except for one on here. As far as quality of fish it seems like a lot of other vendors have gone down hill.

I had a great experience with Dr Reef just now. Exquisite was in really good health.

I look into him but his process is little vague and feel they miss important parts in the process so I just have a couple import for me and I get at cost or just above
Also have strikers but that guy rubbed me wrong a couple times after reaching out to me. He couldn’t even tell me his qt process but just read the website. I’m picky

Ya, if a seller can’t tell you their qt process then that’s a big issue for sure. I’m still trying to figure out what fish to get next let alone from whom.

Agree. If they know what they are doing and charging more for pricey fish something wrong. Owner reached out to me for trading a couple everyday tangs for a p. hemitaeniatus. It’s was public so I tried not to embarrass him to much.

This is another point where I became confused, because not only do I have to pick the right fish within the same family that play nice but also have other fish that may or may not play nice and how to figure out who’s who without messing something up obviously it’s trial and error and a little bit of learning along the way, but just one more piece to the puzzle that stresses me out lol

Dr. Reef is who I’ve decided I’d probably get most of my fish from just from a health standpoint. It sounds like he does a great job of at least making sure he’s not sending you a sick fish etc. I’ve seen so many fish everywhere and it just seems like with so many other websites that may actually have something that somebody other places don’t have it. It’s a tossup as to if the fish would potentially be healthy or not and since I’m still new at it I definitely don’t know who needs certain care as far as some are more prone to worms or ich or, etc.
besides Petco, there are only two places reasonably close that sell saltwater fish and the only one of those that I’ve been to yet are hit or miss what they have and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a wrasse there for sure…. The other place I’m checking out this evening. They post their new shipment list each month when they receive it and this month’s list only had two or three? Wrasses and I don’t think last months had one on it at all. I am going to ask if they handle special orders, etc.

I agree with you on the picking of fish. Not only do you need to pick a fish that will coexist but also one that has the right personality.

So I found a list I made and this is the one I think I actually sat down with the chart but I thought I’d transferred it to my phone lists but this is a whole different list. Lol. Picture to include how my brain works. Lol. Thoughts on this list?

Fairy’s - pick 3 of 4?
Dusky brunneus- C. brunneus
Splendid pintail - C. isosceles
Naoko - C. naokoae
Solorensis - which I had Xd out and can’t remember why? Prob someone on here said they were a problem?

M. bipartis x1

Melasmaposum, radiant or biocellatus - love the melamaposum if this should go in last by itself I could justify the higher price.

Flashers x2? - decisions…..

man’s possible one more? Exquisite? Or…. A. Neoguinaicus - China Pearl Black banded. I have seen something negative about the anampses?

Anampses and macropharyngodon have the same problem. They don't ship well and are prone to fatal mouth injuries. If you get one that is eating it will probably do well.
