The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

I was more planning for a tanakai pair as this was my first ever pygmy wrasse species to own. And the tank size is a 3’x16”x1’ tank with a lot of rockwork and blind spots. Also once coral grows there will be more broken up viewing points.

I am more of a large tank guy. I do love keeping breeding units of fishes in my tank. There is a thread I started on keeping breeding units of fish in our tank in the remote past. Maybe it would be of great interest to bring it back up from the deep to gather more information and experiences of other reefers. I will see if I can find it. Maybe it was at ReefCentral.com many year ago.

One thing I never realised is that there used to be “Wetmorella triocellatus” in circulation, was this the old name for Tanakai or is Tanakai actually the name for the larger species?

I actually have never keep a Possum wrasse. I am about to turn my 40 reef system that I used for QT all these years to a permanent system. Maybe I will keep small cryptic fishes in there. I will be very interested in your experiences.

Trust me, I’m lucky to get those! Mine do the exact same thing, if they’re in the mood they seem to ‘tell’ me by coming up to the glass. Then as soon as I go for a photo they hide and almost pose haha.
This is truly the one fish I would say is a toddler.

You really need a telephoto lens so you don’t have to get too close to the front of the tank. That really help with taking pictures of shy fish.

For those of you who also mix fairies, what is your experience mixing Cirrhilabrus brunneus with the following wrasses? Tank is a 75 gallon mixed reef with a variety of other fish.

Cirrhilabrus isosceles
Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis
Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus
Halichoeres iridis
Halichoeres timorensis

Other consideration is keeping it in the 180 gallon with the broomtail wrasse, as the Katherine's fairy wrasse in my 47 gallon would kill it (relentlessly bullies any other wrasse, and even the damsels, even in a larger tank).

I’ve had isosceles bully one of my brunneus (they are in the same complex) so if possible I would add another fairy or two at the same time as the brunneus to disperse any potential aggression. Also, I’ve found that brunneus is particularly jumpy I lost both of mine to jumping during tank maintenance. They seem to spook easily.

Thinking about adding a Biota captive bred cleaner wrasse to my 225. Already have:

Radiant wrasse
Exquisite wrasse
Melanurus wrasse
Ornate leopard wrasse
Male Lineatus wrasse

Also have a Midas blenny, bonded pair of genicanthus Bellus angels, two tangs, and a trio of Lyretail anthias

Any problem adding the cleaner?

You may get a small bit of aggression from the melanurus however it shouldn’t be overly bad considering the tank size. You should be alright however just remain cautious whilst introducing the cleaner.

Just wanted to add this as a comparison of how much these guys have coloured up. The first photo was the day I got them and the second is the most recent photo I have of one of them. Also for some size comparisons;
that slate with the clam on is about 3 inches long with the clam ontop being around 2 inches. Those trochus are all rather young and only a few mm.

Added a rock from an unstocked tank that is just growing pods now and the bipartitus had an absolute field day. Must've been occupied for at least an hour. Very fun to see. Can't wait till I finish plumbing the tanks together and hopefully get a good natural flow of live food.

I actually doing the same thing. Put a piece of rock from my QT system to the DT when I need to remove some of the Fauna and Flora from the QT system. This is what happened to my rock as I place it into the DT from my QT system over 3 days.

Day 1. the CBB hunting pods and worms on the rock along with the Foxface having a feast. One can really see the round stomach of the Foxface

Day 2

Day 3. The rock will go back to the DT. Not everything was wipe out so it will regrow quickly.

I actually want to say you have a marisirubri as the dorsal and anal fins go rather far back compared to a normal bipartitus but to confirm it a photo of her dorsal fin being open completely would be useful.
