The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

My timor (Halichoeres timorensis) and radiant (Halichoeres iridis) leave most inverts alone. The timor likes to eat smaller snails like stomatella, cerith, and Astraea. The timor and my secretive wrasse (Pseudocheilinus evanidus) also like to try and rip legs off the brittle starfish, so those have learned to only come out at night.

I have 2 skunk cleaner shrimp and 4 peppermint shrimp in with them without issue, but would not trust them with sexy shrimp or anemone shrimp. It also helps to add the shrimp at night when the wrasses are sleeping, and to use a net to make sure they get to the rockwork. Don't just dump them in and assume they'll make it down to the rockwork fine. A shrimp swimming in the water column is like ringing a food bell.

They, along with the 2 hogfish, pencil wrasses, and leopard wrasses did a very thorough job inspecting the new maxima clam today. You can see the secretive wrasse in the 2nd pic

I remember my old chrysus loved shrimp, skunks and peppermints. Haven‘t tried any stars yet, though I do want to add some to my tank.

They don't bother the actual sea stars, just the brittles. The brittles heal up fast though, no major issues. The black brittles, red brittles, and tiger serpents all make great detritivores and help make a more biodiverse reef.

I have a larger blue linckia and a tile fromia in this tank, and nobody cares about them at all. Labouti and brunneus in pic for wrasse tax :)

How long have you had the tile fromia? I was tempted the other day but wasn’t sure about their tank survival rate.
I would like a leopard Wrasse as well. Probably more than the shrimp(s). How much sand would I need? I had an area an inch or two deep when I got the radiant but it’s gotten spread out/reduced with cleaning. Suggestions on specific leopards/fairy/flashers?

Ah. Youngins. I wasn’t able to go beyond 2 years with my fromia. Less with linkia. Hope yours do better. They are one of my favorite creatures.

I love them as well. Had both in my old 110 for over a year, sold them with the rest of the inhabitants when I had to do an emergency tear down after the stand broke.

In my old 187 gallon years ago I had a Linckia for close to 4 years. Lost it in an accident that killed everything living in the tank (my grandfather with severe dementia added a whole bottle of floor cleaner to the tank).

Ich or sand? My Lineatus have been out of QT for a week and I'm finding it hard to tell if these dots today are sand grains or Ich? I've got really quite fine grain sand which is all over the place so I'm struggling to tell. Tried to do my best with the pics - thanks in advance.

This one (below) has quite a large gash above its left eye - it was quite white yesterday - I thought a scale was healing over, the white went away this morning and is now back this afternoon.

I've been staring at the all day and am going coocoo. All else fails there are some nice wrasse photos for y'all

UNWD got my first Naoko

This is what I'm wondering about the Naoko I recently lost. He swam pretty vertical with its head pointed up, he could swim horizontal but when he just relaxed and stayed in one spot is when he would go more heads up. couldn't seem to use its tail, pretty much exclusively using its pectoral fins to get around. It had been like that since when I first got him and it wasn't super obvious in qt that he had any sort of serious issue as he hung out in one spot mostly.

Yes, that in fact looks very similar to the one I had after I put it in the dt:(
Are naokos more prone to this?

I'm trying a rhomboid now, my lfs had a real nice female

They are probably the wrasse I see with it most unfortunately. Some rumors are collection techniques may cause it.

Cirrhilabrus exquisitus the exquisite fairy wrasse. They come in quite a few variants, this one is African but they are all gorgeous. Also a very peaceful and easy wrasse.

I’ve been intrigued in this for a while but haven’t found anything yet. Did this species every get truly identified?

If I’m honest, those dorsal filaments remind me of my hybrid with the way they’re paired and not singular strands.
