The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Well, I got a new wrasse to replace the lubbocki!
He won’t be in my tank until Friday as I would rather not introduce him in the week I’m working in my LFS so instead I’ll be able to see him in here :)

For the uninitiated, what is it?

My favorite part of that wrasse are the fin rays.

I know right! I love how they’re bright purple, I wish I could’ve gotten an indo lubbocki but I just don’t want to risk it with my Cebu.

I would agree. Two male Lubbocki is too much even in my larger tank. While they did not kill each other, there was a constant state of war between the two of them.

Question for you all:

What do you consider to be a “fair” price for a pintail fairy (Cirrhilabrus isosceles)? Or what do they tend to go for in your area?

I’m asking because I think it would be a good final addition to my 80g tank, and I saw a cute one yesterday with a $175 price tag. My last pintail passed ~2.5 years ago after a long and happy life, and while I know prices are up across the board, I don’t remember paying nearly that much.

$100 for this fish is long gone. They have doubled over the years. If that fish is healthy then that isn’t a terrible price. They are better looking than many more costly wrasses including the rhomboid and lineatus imo.

I had to replace mine awhile back, first I bought show male from LA when they sent me regular Juvenile/female show male was 150 ( Witch I paid for on DD), J/F was 80. (Did get a full credit) Replace LFS got me one for 80, trans to male. Other on this Board I Can't Think, Took, Slocke Plus others. have all shared the wrasses have a 5-7 year window. So getting these show male could be approaching end of life cycle. Plus most Juvinelles/females will convert to male over time.

Also reef pros has then for 89.99 ( out of stock)

Good Luck

I still think $100 cuz that’s what I'm used to, most I’d pay and think fair price is $150. $300+ for it is ridiculous. Funny enough TSA sells them for under 100 sometime.

I can’t remember what I paid, but I think it was something like $95 for my old one. Kinda had that same ~$100 range in my mind. And funny enough, that’s where I was yesterday when I saw the fish. They are my LFS.

I didn’t know if the price seemed high because they are “out of season” or something like that. Or maybe, as others just noted, those days are gone haha.

Thanks for the input everyone. Guess I need to update my expectations regarding price!

Think my first pintail was like $80 precovid. Post covid my second to replace the jumper was like $100. I have recently seen them for $150.

Way overpriced IMO.

They are all of an $100 fish. Any more then that is just price gouging IMHO.

I was just browsing some LFS on the west coast(accidental click of a sponsor on here). He had pintails for $80 with $39.99 overnight priority shipping.

$199 for a choati leopard. I nearly jumped on it.

Not anymore. They are pushing them for $249 last I looked. Agreed. Ridiculous.

Maybe I’ll ask my LFS’s. Im guessing the northwest one will say $400 and my northeast one $80.

Im depressed about my gold nugget and have been avoiding looking at stores. Tempted to see if my cheap LFS still has one of those two spot Māoris, a small banana, or small tusk though.

What do you mean? Did it jump?

Well the choats is back in the overflow again. I spent a pretty penny on a high end lid and that fish has figured out how to flex the screen mid flight. Now I have to zip tie some halfa$$ solution to the top of the weirs.

My AIO emergency overflow had about 1/4-1/2" gap between lid, so I had to close it up somehow. Used plastic mesh canvas for embroidery and siliconed it up against the back wall. Works.

No idea. About a week ago I didn’t see it in the morning. Haven’t seen it’s body but I have cats so it might have jumped

Not everywhere though thankfully. At least some people haven’t lost their minds
