The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

I may get one more flasher it should not be a problem. I could not let the eightline pass the price was a sweet 60$ I could not believe it he also had crescent tails for 25$ because I have the maybe crescent tail in qt i did not take one.
yeah those prices are crazy. Why so inexpensive? especially the Lunatus

My Eightline is one of favorites as well...

I think it’s because he don’t qt plus he don’t have the room to House all the shipments he gets. The basement of his home is the business from what I can see when I pulled up the address when he posted the first listing a few weeks back.

There’s a local shop near me that is the same way ... really low prices on fish but buyer takes on the risk of taking fish quickly.

Leopard wrasses go into a small tank with pods but all other fish go into stock tanks full of meds.

He’s been raising prices with livestock from Hawaii but anything else is way lower than other shops.

okay so currently i have a 120 gallon tank that i am essentially transferring to another 120gallon tank. (Longish story, but essentially moving the tank to get better plumbing, access to water and switching to a drilled overflow rather than corner).

This has left me thinking of my stocking and how i would like to add more wrasses.

Currently i have

1 pintail
1 midas blenny
2 occ clowns
1 orchid dotty back
2 radial filefish
1 YWG with pistol shrimp
2 bangai cardinals

They all get along swimmingly. The midas was a one point more boisterous but has become pretty shy, and the orchid was interested in pintail in the acclimation box but they don't interact at all. (besides the pintail is now 2x the size of the orchid)

First question- i was thinking of adding 1-2 more fairy wrasses (Bathy and rhomboid/lineatus) and potentially a flasher as well. If i kept the rest the same would there be issues? I know dottybacks have a rep, but my orchid really is very tame, while my midas is also pretty shy as well.
Second- would this be an issue bioload wise? It seems hard to figure out how and when this becomes an issue. My water quality has been very good, but just don't know how best to decide. I know the ole rule of thumb was 1" of fish for 5 gallons. FWIW my fish all are on the small side despite being mature.

I am considering getting rid of the Bangai and the midas blenny- would that make it easier to get more wrasses in?

other stocking possibilities would be a leopard and/or drgonet of some sort.

@eatbreakfast? anyone?

I qt every fish so no worries there. I’m waiting to see when he gets lineatus and flame what the price would be.

With a 120 you would be in wrasse haven I don’t know if the dottyback would be a problem or not but the big dogs will jump in on that one. I will say this all can be nice in a Dt and you add one fish and war starts. So always use a box to socialize them to each other first before letting them lose in the Dt.

I think the midas could be issue as I have seen one nip at Pintail at LFS and heard the same from another. Seemed to be territorial.

I think you could add those fairies plus a flasher or two.

@OrinN I seen that you said that your qt is not really a qt and I have been meaning to ask you about. Let’s say something goes left how would you treat them ?

are c. earlei or claires available at all? or in prices that are more on par with other fish. (I.e. a couple hundred rather than 5-700)
Rarely available and more that $500.00 per fish. I think Claires are above $1k when available. @evolved has one and has had an C. Earlei as well.

Those species should work.

Each tank is different as far as bioload capacity. So just moniter your water quality.

I wouldn't worry about the orchid. They are a pretty peaceful dottyback.

Fairy and flasher wrasses are mich faster than the midas. I wouldn't be too concerned about that either.

Thanks everybody.
What camera are you using to take pictures?
I use my iPhone 6 when I have to take quick pictures. It is a really good camera most of the time. I also have a Olympus OM-D E5 Mark II. This is a really good camera that I cannot fully use. Much more sophisticate than I need. I can take really good picture but I wish I know more and able to use it to it's full capability.

@OrinN I seen that you said that your qt is not really a qt and I have been meaning to ask you about. Let’s say something goes left how would you treat them ?
Curious as well
It always slips me to ask wanted to ask since I seen his qt.
I do have hospital tank(s) when needed.
I don't treat Ich or Lymphocystic. They just resolve by itself. If the fish is sick, then I capture him and move him to a treatment tank and treat him accordingly. I don't quarantine for Ich. It just not a significant problem in my tank. I think the fauna in the sand bed feast of the tomites so when the parasite leave the fish, they just get consume by the fauna in the sand bed. I think this is how Ich get control in the wild. My fish don't get Ich even when I introduce a fish with Ich into the system. A week or two and the spots just go away. In the past when I had disaster and get really stressed fish, Ich does not break out in my tank.
I mainly use the QT to get the fish healthy and get use to eating the food I provide for them. I try to keep the QT system healthy and full of fauna and flora to get the sensitive fish to optimal health prior to introduce them in DT.
