The number of dorsal filaments. McCoskers has only 1 dorsal filament.

Tips on how to differentiate between a mccoskers and a carpenters flasher?

Normally it’s the dorsal filaments but that tend to be harder at the female stage. As males it’s much easier to tell them appart.

Also patterning is different, these wrasses have slightly different patterns as adults but it’s been forever since I’ve seen these wrasses in tanks next to eachother so I couldn’t tell you how much of a difference it is. If I remember correctly it’s only a small difference but it’s there if you look closely.

Are most of the “Green” wrasses aggressive as adults? I know that Exquisites are peaceful and fall under that category when you seperate them into the colour groups but just wondered if when the time comes and that Melanomarginatus gets aggressive if I should steer away from all of the greens except the exquisite (If I went with that species, I’d grab either a Vanuatu or African variant).

Also, when we talk about the colours and what looses more colour if they don’t have a reason to flash, does that include every genus of wrasse or just Paracheilinus and Cirrhilabrus?

To me that looks like a terminal male earmuff!! And he is for sure a beaut :)
Hope you add to the collection of wrasses, I’d love an earmuff but they’re rare and when you find one it’s not a pretty tag for even a juvie.

You're might be right. I saw the dorsal spots and assumed it was female, but he's more likely a transitional male. It was definitely a lucky find. Went to 3 LFS looking for nothing in particular and found this guy.

He's not the only wrasse though. 3 fairies, 1 leopard, and 2 halichoeres now.

The more I look at it the more I am starting to see C. africanus, I think salty has gotten it correct in it being C. africanus :)
You should have a beautiful male too since that species of I remember correctly falls under the red category of wrasses.

I’m jealous of that jordani, also never knew the male cosmetus looked so much like a melanurus. If they’re all iPhone pics you do SO much better than me haha, mine all wind up on the bad end of pictures compared to the other guys like SaltyT and Crabby ect… although I am rather proud of the photo I got of my CBB. Such a pain there isn’t a wrasse in it cause then I could possibly have gotten away with putting it on here

I’m jealous of that jordani, also never knew the male cosmetus looked so much like a melanurus. If they’re all iPhone pics you do SO much better than me haha, mine all wind up on the bad end of pictures compared to the other guys like SaltyT and Crabby ect… although I am rather proud of the photo I got of my CBB. Do you have a newer iphone? I have a galaxy s10 myself and it has a pro picture mode. Can change a bunch of different settings so I can at least make half decent pics. It can even capture moving fish sort of well. I assume iphones probably have something similar.

Do you have a newer iphone? I have a galaxy s10 myself and it has a pro picture mode. Can change a bunch of different settings so I can at least make half decent pics. It can even capture moving fish sort of well. I assume iphones probably have something similar.

I have the IPhone 11 Pro so it’s a relatively new one and it can grab some rather nice photos and I actually got hold of some nice photos, The one I got of my Jade was funny and it focused halfway through a turn

Pseudocheilinops ataenia.

Also, for anyone like me with an IPhone just to grab photos I’ve found slowly moving the phone the same way the fish moves gets some beautiful shots. Also top-down photos are even better with wrasses/fish that have Blue iridescent lines on their heads or towards the top of the body. As seen in the Naokos head there are iridescent lines only caught from top-down photos or with REALLY heavy blues on.

Also top-down photos are even better with wrasses/fish that have Blue iridescent lines on their heads or towards the top of the body. As seen in the Naokos head there are iridescent lines only caught from top-down photos or with REALLY heavy blues on.

I use to use aquarium cam app it removes the blue.

I didn’t get rid of the blue, my lights are just set at 30% blue and 70% white in the day.
I mainly wait for lights to hit their height then try get photos, also getting photos from top down can often get rid of the blue but leave iridescence. In fact you can see in some of the photos I got of my leopard that the blue is still there just it mainly reflects on the white spots. I plan to try raise the blue lights when I come to attaining a clam and some SPS but can’t figure out what would look good and have it with a bit of a browner “tint” to it.

why don't you try getting a brown or orange filter?
it helps a lot.

I have NEVER known that pintails have so many iridescent stripes!!! Making me want one so badly now! I really wish I could set up at 3’ wrasse & Tilefish tank sooner.
Certainly shows that glass is a blocker of certain colours (Most commonly seen with clams and blue mushrooms)
