There's something fishy about this build...

I see.

It’s almost impossible for magnesium to be anywhere near that value.

I’ll explain why:

1) Instant ocean is wildly proven through decades and ICP testing: the magnesium is around 1280-1300 ppm, which is near natural seawater. It will be highly unlikely to receive such a faulty batch.

2) All For Reef contains magnesium. It won’t account for 100% consumption, but it does supply enough to prevent such drastic readings.

3) Most importantly, it’s mathematically and chemically unfeasible for magnesium to drop that low through consumption.

Magnesium depletes very slowly in exact ratios found in calcium carbonate, either through abiotic or biotic precipitation

2.8 dKH alkalinity, 18-20 ppm calcium, and 1-2 ppm magnesium

Coralline algae has a higher affinity for magnesium, since they are made from magnesium calcite instead of aragonite, so we’ll use the upper end to show that even in extreme cases, this value is highly unlikely.

To drop 50 ppm magnesium, you’d also need to deplete 70 dKH of alkalinity. This is worst case scenario, assuming you predominantly have coralline algae and only used sodium-based alkalinity additives.

4) Couple that with the fact magnesium kits are notorious for displaying dangerously false lows, I wouldn’t put any validity in the accuracy of home kits.

In fact, I would never even bother measuring magnesium at home. If you genuinely wanted to know, ICP would be the way, but I doubt it will lie anywhere near that reported level.

Yeah
I read the Randy thing. I wasn't even going to test for magnesium lol.
But thanks for telling me. Means I wont go crazy and add ally concentrated magnesium 😂

I thought we liked making essays here. 😂

Nah, I’m kidding around. But yeah, I hate magnesium tests lol.

Is that lemonade?

Nope
Its calcium hydroxide, magnesium sulsafe, magnesium chloride, and red sea trace.

Wow. That’s quite the concoction…

…who are you trying to kill? 😛

Speaking about concoctions, does anyone here like to drink?

I am an avid tea and espresso drinker. Both with loads of frothy milk, naturally.

Well
Long overdue I decided to test:
Nitrate 7.9
Phos 0.52
Alk 8.6
Calcium 390
Mag 960

So I'm putting the GFO reactor back into use. Then I'm upping AFR a little and adding magnesium and nitrate.
I bought reagents and brought my testers inside!
Baby steps.

Only when out. I like weird margaritas and mules right now
Welcome back. I thought you got sucked into the abyss.

I never tried alcohol in my life. lol

There. That’s my confession. You earned it. 🙃

A lot of people here don't drink. Nothing out of the ordinary.

That’s good to know.

I was considering trying it for the first time (still contemplating)

I was initially planning on trying vodka as my first drink. It’s pure and ethanol. It’s clean enough to carbon dose for the reef tank.

I mean, it’s the perfect choice!

Dont drink everclear straight. Needs diluted. 30% ro/di or distilled water, 20% everclear, the rest vinegar.

You know what... i bet my recipe is even off....

Your recipe sounds better than Sam’s Calcium X Magnesium Hydroxide Death Row’s Juice

Yeah…
If you want to never drink again. If you want to like it get a “girly drink” like my favorites. Fruity and sweet. Apparently girls like to drink things that taste good. While men want to hate every bitter sip.

lol

I had a really cool buddy recommend me try red wine for the first time. I usually think their advice is pretty good.

Fruity and sweet drinks? I’ll consider that lol.

I heard vodka tastes like acetone. As someone who wasn’t born with a sense of smell, I don’t think I would ever consider drinking that. It burns just by standing above it.
