There's something fishy about this build...

That’s good to know.

I was considering trying it for the first time (still contemplating)

I was initially planning on trying vodka as my first drink. It’s pure and ethanol. It’s clean enough to carbon dose for the reef tank.

I mean, it’s the perfect choice!
For context, I quit drinking a year ago (in one week)…

But… if you want a fruity, girly drink which is dangerously tasty, and enjoy a bit of cocktail mixing; try a French martini!

What’s everyone’s best advice for hangovers?

You know…in case I go overboard…

— Dont drink on an empty stomach!

— Plenty of water during drinking, and before bed…

— Sleep in the next day, sleep it off!

— if all the above fail, run to the bathroom and pray to the porcelain god!

Thank you for your experience and advice!

Was it hard to quit? Were there withdrawals? I hope I’m not intruding or making you uncomfortable by asking.

Sound advice sir

I like a big greasy cheeseburger and a glass of water before going to sleep. Wake up like a million bucks. Throw in a couple advil for re assurance.
Sounds like a recipe for heartburn. lol

I’ll consider it.

There is no cure for a hangover but time! If you can make one you’ll be super rich lol.. if I get drunk nowadays I’m hung over for 4 days so I just drink to keep a nice buzz and chill.. I used to be able to do it every day but I’m almost 50 now and my body is like nah son! Go to sleep! Haha

Thank you for your experience and advice!

Of course! Haha just don’t make the same mistake I did and make it a daily occurrence!

I hope I’m not intruding or making you uncomfortable by asking.

not at all! I’ve come to terms with it, and am comfortable talking about my experiences with others as a cautionary tale!

My only concerns are that this is a topic which might violate site terms of service, Re, family friendliness! — would any admins like to chime in on the acceptability of discussing such a difficult topic on the forums?

Or is this a subject better left to a private group conversation for all those interested?

It was, and there were… let me just make sure this is an acceptable topic of conversation to elaborate on both for site policy reasons, and for the sake of poor @Slocke ‘s build thread!

I think their main issue is with sexual content.

I personally don’t see the issue with talking about struggles and addiction, but I’m no mod.

Brother, I hear ya! I'm 53. I'll keep a day buzz going all day on the lake, but I know when to say when. Like you, it takes a couple days to fully recover.

Agreed! I’m just playing it overly cautious, given the contentious nature of the subject matter! Haha I also feel bad about derailing the build thread further!

Feel free to send me a PM if you’d like to know more of the details! — Anyone who wants to join in can also let me know!

Thank you. I will definitely message you.

The main reason I’ve never touched alcohol in my entire life is because I was scared of becoming addicted. My family drinks heavily, and I never wanted to become like that.

Personally I think it is important to celebrate sobriety and also important to educate on the dangers of alcohol. It is a drug that is addictive.

So congratulations, I know its not easy to quit!!

I agree wholeheartedly!

Thank you! It needed to happen in my case; everything aquarium related I’ve done in years started six months after I kicked the habit!

It is important to know yourself. If you suffer from addiciton or have family history of addiction, it's completely reasonable to proceed with caution and call it quits sooner rather than later. If you typically moderate yourself well, you will likely be able to moderate yourself with alcohol and don't need to be fearful. Also keep in mind that you don't need to get completely obliterated. If you can enjoy a cocktail/wine/beer or two and that's it, I'd say that's optimal.

Thank you very much.

Preventing addiction is definitely a concern. I struggle with anxiety, and I’m worried I’ll actually like the alcoholic “high” carefree effects.

But the risk of addiction is actually not the primary reason why I’ve abstained my whole life.

I’ve turned Sam’s thread into an alcoholic thread. I’m so sorry Sam lol. I think we’re all learning, sharing info, and enjoying the topic — I know I am. It’s very interesting reading other people’s perspectives and experiences with alcohol.

It’s so taboo. I really like how open we’ve all been. It’s actually really nice. I haven’t had a nice convo like this in a while.

I don’t know. It just feels like family. 🙂

Pleasant diversion from codgery debates on wrasse phylogeny (@Slocke heart hug smoochy emoji). And we are far removed from a thread on alcoholism. That is an entirely different animal. I see this as tickling your curiosity about partaking in a bit of drinking revelry. Why not give it the old college try and have some fun!

Also note, there's nothing wrong and nothing you're missing out with an alcohol-free life. I'm over 20 years sober and during that time have "partied hard" in some of the world's biggest party scenes (think major EU city raves, Ibiza, etc.).

We're all on a journey here. Happy to be a part of yours!
