IMO this is what will happen if you take the LFS advice when setting up your first reef tank.

I guess some people didn't find this as funny as I did. I guess my wife is right I am a little twisted. :bathbaby:

LOL! Yes it is funny!

I agree it is funny, luckily I learned when setting up my fw tank last year not to trust my local store. So when it came to setting up my first sw tank I already knew that I needed to do my own research :fish2:

That is funny. On a side note I've been very fortunate. My LFS has great people working there that are very knowledgable and not solely after the almighty dollar. I'm a regular customer there and they know my tank details by heart, so they can make recommendations that suit my tank. I would consider all the employees my friends as well.

Unfortunatly I think in some ways most of us have. When I wanted to keep fw angelfish I had a store associate tell me I could keep 5 of them in a 5 gallon aquarium. I being niave decided to go with a 10 gallon, it was a good thing that I started researching how to take care of them, needless to say a tank upgrade followed very quickly and took some wisdom away from the experience

Yeah I should have reworded it a little. It is intended to bash every LFS out there just ones that you know are bad. There are a few stores here that I trust to but there is only a few people I trust there. This is meant for the stores that I walk into and they send the people to me about setting up a tank. I'm sure you know the type. Not meant to insult anyone that has went though there LFS to start there first saltwater tank. Honestly if it wasnt for the LFS most people wouldn't think twice about our hobby. They would just go to the aquariums or go diving to see the fish and corals. IMO

You can keep FW angels in a 5g on the ride home. I have never been able to keep FW angels. They are like discus they like 80+ water temp and all my others were tropical. So how did that workout for you.

They got moved over to a 50 gallon long which I set up as a planted tank. I did have them set up in a community tank and kept the temp at 78 which seemed to work well for everyone. In November after I moved I found out the one of my angels was a female and have had her spawn at least 4 or 5 times now that I know of and she paired up with one of the smaller guys who I am sure is a male. Have not had any successful spawnings, the male I think is still too young and the eggs never get fertilized although they both go through the motions. The pair is actually going to be rehomed in the next week or two into the boyfriend's tank at his office. So will get to see if they ever get beyond just laying the eggs. The angels that I have are captive bred, from research that I had done wild caught ones usually do need to be kept in warmer water.

Nice job. To bad they don't breed like guppies. My 6 yr old started with two and now has at least 50 in a 20g. Lol

I had platys in my tank and I had one female that would drop close to 50 fry at a time.

Yeah live bearers are dreading machines under the right conditions. I kept guppies for years and never had them breed but once i got into live plants they went crazy. I'm sure it is the soft water made from the driftwood that did it. You might find this cool but my first planted tank was a 29g and I had five male bettas living in it together with a peacock cichlid. Unfortunately the cichlid got big and aggressive and killed the bettas and plant then died from who knows what. The upside is as soon as I cleaned the tank I took a leap into saltwater. Yay.

i was at a lfs and overheard a guy wanting to buy a banded cat shark they had in there tank the lfs employee had no problem selling it to him when she went to help another customer i talked to the guy a little more and found out he had a 35gallon bowfront and filled him in on the details of the shark species he was wanting and how big they got he decided against the purchase and the lfs employee was none to happy with me.

Got to love people. They act like they are paid on commission when it come to sells but they get paid by the hour. I have been told the same thing by a LFS owner that is a fellow reefer. But she did tell me that I would need to get a bigger tank in the next year or so. Of course I have a 75g and it was a pup. Lol
