Saw this on LA DD tonight and said WOW HOLY **** OMG!!! But then I said wait- don't goniporas like this have huge polyps that extend out like 5"?

So here's my question. Does this coral have polyps that extend more than they are in the pic?

Of they stay like they are in this pic, I can assure you I will get the next one of these I see on DD.

I got a piece of pink goni from a fellow reefer and it has shorter polyps than the others I have ever seen. Mine extends a bit further than the picture you have posted but they get no longer than 1". Also the lighting and flow will have a influence on what type of polyp extension you are going to recieve from the coral.

That pic looks way photoshopped. I love LA but their pics are not representative of the true colors, imo. Just today I got a red scoly from DD. While it is nice, it wasn't nearly as bright red as the pic on DD would lead you to believe.

ehh, sorta. Ya, bigger colonies will extend further, but it really depends more on species. From the looks of it, the one the OP posted from DD was a stutchburyi or planulata, which only really extend a few inches at max, averaging around 1 inch most of the time, and are a lot easier to take care of. Something like stokesi or lobata (the typical green ones seen in most fish stores) can extend 8-9 inches and are **** near impossible to care for.

I have a pretty good variety of goniopora in my tank (I have 5 different ones right now) and polyp extension will vary. I have a red one that only extends about an inch, a blue one that extends about 2.5" and a yellow/green one that extends 4" or more. It varies between individual species.

Different gonis have different tentacle lengths. There are a bunch of encrusting goni species where the tentacles tend to not get longer than 1-2", but most of the massive (ball-shaped) types have tentacles at LEAST 4" long. Had a red goni who's skeleton was the size of a small lemon, but was the size of a large grapefruit when open. The ubergoni is about the size of a baseball when closed, but the size of a volleyball when open. AND - they have a potent sting that with time can kill neeeearly anything. zoas, cyphastreas, acros, montis, you name it.

They're definitely worth the space though. :D
