This week in the history of chemistry #7 Very busy week!
Nov 30, 1948. Chlorotetracycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic (also known as aureomycin), was isolated by Benjamin Minge Duggar at American Cyanamid (now part of BASF Agricultural Products), 1948.
Nov 30, 1761 Smithson Tennant was born. He discovered iridium (Ir, element 77) and osmium (Os, 76), and determined that diamonds are pure carbon.
Dec 1, 1936 The Drunkometer, the first practical breath test for alcohol, was patented by Rolla Neil Harger.
Dec 1, 1743 Martin Heinrich Klaproth was born. He discovered uranium (U, element 92) from pitchblende; discovered zirconium (Zr, 40); codiscovered cerium (Ce, 58); rediscovered chromium (Cr, 24).
Dec 2, 1984. In Bhopal, India, at a Union Carbide India facility, a disastrous release of methyl isocyanate that would claim over 4000 lives began, 1984.
Dec 2, 1970 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) opened under the directorship of William Ruckelshaus.
Dec 2, 1942. First artificially initiated self-sustained nuclear fission reaction (Chicago pile one) under Stagg Field, University of Chicago.
Dec 2, 1957. First large-scale commercial nuclear power plant began operation at Shippingport, PA.
Dec 5, 1901. Werner Heisenberg was born. He developed quantum mechanics (matrix mechanics) and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle; Nobel Prize (physics), 1932
Dec 5, 1863 Charles Martin Hall was born. He discovered a method of extracting aluminum electrolytically (US patent 400,665) from bauxite (in his garage).
Dec 7, 1909 The first thermosetting manmade plastic ("Bakelite") was patented (US patents 942,699 and 942,700 to Leo Baekeland). The reaction involved phenol and formaldehyde.
Dec 7, 1970 Linus Pauling published Vitamin C and the Common Cold. Pauling's claims have been treated with skepticism in the medical community, but widely embraced and publicized nonetheless.
