Thoughts on Reef Jars?

Is there a minimum size they should be?
1/2 to 1 gallon.

What coral do you think is the coolest to have in a jar?
A hearty montipora echinata.

What is keeping you from starting one?
Algae Barn has not released an AIO Reef Jar kit yet ;)

1) just big enough one at least one Naso Tang.

Do you keep the lid off completely? Really like how it looks with just natural light!

Definitely want a lid to reduce evaporation and salinity swings. I'm a novice reefer, but I went with a jar to avoid big tank problems. Don't have to deal with large volumes of water, most invaders and nuisance algaes can be dealt with easily. I can take out all of my rock, brush algae off, peroxide what's needed and do a 100% water change in 30 minutes. Just seemed like a lower stress option overall and I think it's aesthetically more interesting than a comparable square edge pico. The magnifying effect of the jar has it's pros and cons, but interesting none the less.

Also, an RFA garden!

I think the worst thing is the shape, never been a fan of bow front tanks and cylinder shaped one, the viewing is just awful. if they made cube jars I would consider having one just with just algaes and critters

They do make square and rectangular jars. It justifies my collection as "it's a nice container'

We have a lid on ours but I was asking on their build if they chose to keep the lid of because it was in a window seal and possibly getting more light/heat.


All these suggestions are killing me and trying to resist the urge of setting up multiple jars haha :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

We already sell jars on the website- They just come with pods in them first :winking-face-with-tongue:

If you want a windowsill jar, you only want indirect light. Turns out temps can vary as well- all my tanks and jars can handle 5° swings and lower baseline temps every day.

Jars are problematic. Because they are small people think that they are easy. This is one of those counter-intuitive things about this hobby ... smaller is harder.

Thankfully much of the coral world today is captive prop., so when the corals get killed as they eventually will, not much is lost.

I like @Eagle_Steve's jar. :P

And that brings me to my final point, if the jar is housing things that don't require supplementation I think that is an interesting idea. If it does require supplementation (Ca etc ..) I think that is a recipe for disaster. I have a small tank and deal with the issues of supplementation. They require some serious consideration and problem solving to get under control. I can't even imagine the ugliness surround this in a jar.

@AlgaeBarn I do however like your jars ... definitely a good idea. :)
