Tips For Montipora Capricornis

I saw a nice frag of a red monti cap last time I went to my LFS. When I go back again I am going to get it if it hasn't been bought already. Does anybody have any tips on growing Monti caps.

I have found them to be very “forgiving.” If you lived in MN I’d give you as much as you want...I need to breakdown a 3 year old, 11 inch, 4 tiered colony;)

If your reef is ready red monti is like the Xenia of SPS.

I started out with a1x1 inch frag and now I’m looking for ways to give it away!

They are ok being at the lower end of high PAR, around 200 or even slightly lower. Mag helps them colour well.

Positioning is a bit of a balance. As they grow they will shade what's underneath, so you wont be able to grow much below them, unless you opt for NPS. So choose a well thought place in your tank, maybe half way vertically so ur not wasting all the space below it due to shadowing. You can probably go even lower, but that will depend on your lighting level settings.

If you have other corals that strive in low PAR <100PAR that r towards the bottom of the tank, then you will have to decide what PAR you want at what level to suit the various corals you may already have.

My favourite is the deep purple colour.

My advice is put them in the water. Period. Almost unkillable, unless you bleach them for reactor media like I do. If you’re in Tampa by chance I can give you piles.

This has been my observations. Most montipora caps and digis to not do well in high alk. That just seems to be my experience but other than that....

This stuff will grow in the sump. All kidding aside, it's super forgiving and does well with stable parameters. I got rid of mine and I'm still finding frags in my tank. My advice, isolate it to its own rock for easy removal or relocating to a different spot.
I think it's closely related to kelp?

Taking up room in my old 22g nano.

I think I sold this for $50? It started as a 1" frag in my 22g, then fragged all but a small piece when I upgraded, then finally sold the colony.

Thats Nice to know. If I lived A little closer I would probably do that. I live in the Gainesville area. Probably about 2 hours away
