My blue spotted toby puffer has always been my least problematic fish, until today! He has literally never even shown interest in anything new I have added (besides zoanthids and most sps corals 😤) in the 4 years I have had him.

I received a baby scrawled cowfish in the mail, and most of the other fish are paying her zero mind. The puffer squares up (flares the top and bottom ridges of his body), and has gone to bite the cowfish. I was shocked! I never suspected he would be the problem out of all of my fish. He's not actively seeking her out, or chasing the cowfish, but I've scared him off the couple times they have encountered each other. I'm thinking about netting and placing him in a timeout box for a couple days when he goes to sleep tonight. Is there a possibility this will help? Or it is likely the puffer will never be okay with the cowfish?

The cowfish has already eaten a little shrimp, and is so cute. I'd hate to have to rehome one of them, especially because we are OBSESSED with our puffer, but I can't have my puffer attacking the poor little thing.

I didn't even think about it prior to getting the cowfish, but are puffers prone to having issues with this type of fish in particular? Seeing them together, I realize they are similar in shape, but never suspected it would be problematic.

I agree, that's a little surprising. How large (small?) of a tank do you have them sharing? An acclimation box for a week or so is probably your next best move.

I ended up putting the puffer in "timeout" in an acclimation box for a day, and that seemed to humble him. Unfortunately, the cowfish seemingly randomly died Christmas day. I think she must have had something underlying I couldn't see going on. She was eating like a pig and was unbothered by all of her tankmates after that initial rude welcome from the puffer.
