Tomini Tangs and small aquariums

Seems that the suggested minimum tank size for a tomini tang is 70-75 gallons.

While I've read (even in this thread) that people have housed other tangs and they simply only grow to their environment, I tend not to believe that, and I would not get a tomini for your tank.

I've only had my tomini for a year or so, and he's probably 4 inches long.
The reason I haven't pulled the trigger on one is because they are too big for my aquarium size. With that said, IF I went crazy and bought one then I would rehome it after a few years. It's not impossible to do in a smaller tank, but there's restrictions on them.

Another question I have is IF I were to get a tomini tang and let him live in my 45g, how susceptible would he be to ich? I have a UV sterilizer.
That is the thing….people often lecture it’s cruel or inhumane to house a tang in a small tank but don’t QT which imo is malpractices. Imagine a fish fight off a plague of parasites for its entire life. I would much rather live in a small comfortable house vs a large house filled with ticks.

QT is a must and is nonnegotiable!

Yes they get intense…I have 3 fish: tang, 6 line, Royal Grammy.

I have kept dozens of tangs, some are only suited for large tanks. Tomini Tangs seem the exception. I have not noticed any behavior issues. He acts similar to tangs I have had in large tanks. Here is my 300+ gallon…

Would you describe the Tomini’s behavior to be similar to that of other, non bristletooth, tangs?

I had a yellow eye bristletooth tang….meanest fish, it killed or harassed fish I would not expect. Even in my 300+ gallon! So no my Tomini’s is very chill in comparison to all other tangs bristletooth or not. Most tangs I have had showed some aggression, but the Tomini’s displays none. I only have 2 other fish and my clown jumped, so maybe he feels no competition with the other fish?

I've had a tomini tang in a 42G display (red sea reefer 200 g2+) for a couple years now. Never seen ick or bad behavior. It swims around, eats algae off the glass (when there is some), sleeps in the rockwork. Its got a flame angel, 2 clowns and 2 damsels as tank mates (and a fire shrimp/crabs).

Auto fish feeder feeds mysis pellets daily. I occasionally add seaweed pellets.

Weekly 5g water changes cause nitrates to zero out. Sump has a fleece roller, 3W UV sterilizer, grow light with chaeto, and an undersized protein skimmer.

I have one in a 180 gallon. He swims back and forth the whole tank and really enjoys the space. Personally I would not put one in anything under 75 gallons.

Animals can adapt to any living conditions. I like to provide my animals the space and environment where they can thrive and live their best life.

How long could a tomini tang thrive in a 45g aquarium? I'm not talking about how long could they live, I'm talking about happily living in a tank that size. I'm always wanted one, but I have a 45g aquarium and I've heard they can be fine for a few years and then I'd have to trade him in. I know I get attached to my fishy friends and it would be a sad day when the time came to say so long friend. In hindsight I should have bought the 65g aquarium because I fear that I have an uphill battle with my wife coming should I decide to ask her about getting a bigger aquarium when the time comes.

I am not looking to add an animal that won't be happy in my tank. If a tomini tang won't be happy, I won't pursue the idea.
Have you considered upgrading your wife? I’m thinking about upgrading my reef aquarium and considering a double upgrade. I would encourage you to do the same 😜.

I would say you’re fine. I have a tomini in my 33 gal, he is very active and only had ich one time (it was my fault, I forgot to QT my Midas blenny and a red Mithrax crab), but he has never been aggressive to other fish, he has only been like “You wanna mess with me?” and then basically bumps into them but never bit anyone or chase anyone. He eats GHA a lot and does poop a lot. I would recommend

I have 1 Tomini in a 200 gallon and I regret getting it. It makes my tank look small and it killed one of my filefish.

Tomini here, 36 months or abouts, since tank started. 160ltr cube. No Issues
