Biocube 29 I stuck some chaeto in the rear middle chamber intank fuge basket, cut up a 3 tube red blue and white led light fixture from Amazon.

Grow Light for Indoor Plants, 198 LEDs Full Spectrum LED Grow Light

Normally you can only light up the red + blue or the white but not all strings at the same time, but I wired them all up to run together.

The first pic here is using 5v @ 4A with all strings lit.

The second more red tinged pic here is using 5v @ 1A with all strings lit.

Is the lighting in the second picture sufficient to keep the chaeto alive if it's exposed 12+ hours, or should I go with the higher power supply?

Test both for a month and see what happens. They make waterproof grow lights and sell them on Amazon for 30$ grows weed too, or at least that's its intended purpose. I wouldn't know though, mine is growing a few varieties of algea instead.

Well I guess so too little light, All of the chaetomorpha algae I purchased disintegrated. Though the green hair algae has no problem growing at all in the display tank. I thought that 12-hour cycle was enough.

Are you adding chemikills to the tank as well. I put algearid in my tank and nuked eveytype of algea I had, so it accomplished its purpose.

I doubt it was the light that caused it to disintegrate. I have been keeping cheato in a tub with a cheap freshwater light for 3 months now and alive and well as i dosed vibrant in tank . Some other condition killed it.

I haven't dust vibrant for weeks and it wasn't in there when I was.

The hair algae grows without problems so I'm perplexed.

Maybe the light isn't bright enough?
