Hey all! I could use some help with One of my torches (NYknicks) it has 2 heads and One of the heads looks abit pale compared to the other One. I suspect its getting a tad too much light. Any inputs is most helpful 🙏 i’ve had the coral for about 2 months and 2 weeks ago i notice it getting a little pale.

Im Dosing AF amino acids Daily.

Its the head on the pictures thats facing the back side and is getting more light there.

The tank itself is 10 months old and everything inside was transferd from my old system which was running for 5 years.

Parameters:
Ph 8.1
Salinitet 34.9ppm Hanna tester
Alk/kh 9.4 salifert test kit
Mg 1440 salifert test kit (abit high i know but been like this for months and everything is good except this ephyllia)
Calcium 430 salifert
Phosphate as of yesturday 0.1(Hanna checker)
Nitrate 10.3 (Hanna checker) View attachment 4272622

you mentioned the phosphate number being recent.

If it had been near zero before, then that is the reason the coral looks like it does. it may take a while, but it should be fine as long as you don't let conditions return to how they were. >0.05 ppm is a good target PO4 for most new tanks. Sometime even higher is beneficial.

Now that you mention it, it did get to 0.01 at One point about 1 month ago for about 2 days before it slowly Climbed up again. But i didnt think of it considering im dosing amino acids daily

But other than that the phosphate has been between 0.05-0.1 afterwards

The aminos may have caused, but if not they would have still aggravated the situation....dosing aminos is a bit like carbon dosing and nitrogen dosing and trace element dosing all in one. In a low-PO4 moment, that's not a good combo as it can cause bacteria to take nutrients to levels well below what is accessible to most other organisms.

As long as PO4 recovered pretty quickly (hours-days) I'm sure the coral will be fine. If it was a longer "PO4 outage" then you might be looking at a bit of a downhill slide before a recovery begins. Damage scales with "exposure"so hopefully it was a short outage.

I had No idea that there could be a downside for aminos, should i stop dosing aminos? And yes i belive it was a short outage. I test my nutrients 2-3 times a week and my mg, ca and alk 1-2 times a week

IMO, I would at least lay off until things seem like they are back on track.

Agreed with mcarrol… it’s not a lighting issue at all as torches can take anything you throw at it! The only time I’ve ever seen a torch lighten up from lighting is when it doesn’t get enough light.. I have a very large colony of 24k and the heads on the bottom that are shadowed are more pale than the ones getting blasted. This is more of a nutrient issue and I’d stay away from aminos at all cost as they cause more problems then good.

The torch looks alot better already with Darker tentacles than before, its funny because after my post i see a difference in it the day after 😂 but i stopped dosing aminos and i turned up the flow a little bit more and it seems to have Done the trick, i Will post a picture when i get home
