Torch splitting

My torch has been shrink for approx. a week. Today It opened twice bigger and I believe it splitted. Is it possible with them, as I have heard different opinions. So I just want a confirmation.
Also it is slowly starting to touch the sand, should I put small rock under it to raise it higher or it will be ok?
