I have two 29 G tanks. I was thinking of picking up a 40 G breeder. And putting the two together. I have moved tanks before. My question is can I reuse the sand (from one) and the crushed coral from the other? I will use the filter and shimmer from the one tank. Is there any thing I should be careful of? My wife has been asking me to move one of the tanks. Why not mix the two. Thanks for the help..

How long have the tanks been setup? Also, how deep is the sand bed?

It is possible that there is detritus pockets in the sand bed. When disturbed, hydrogen sulfide can be released and this can cause a cycle and be harmful to the inhabitants.

can only comment on my experience. I have done this many times up sizing successfully with out issue.. only recommendation is to wash the sand thoroughly in buckets with salt water prior to putting into the new tank.
