Hey folks

I’m currently qting two fish in a 10 gal, a very small flame angel, and a carpenters flasher wrasse. I’m treating with a number of things, but today the tank only received pimafix, melafix, and ich-x. I had this wrasse in my DT when the ich presented itself, h it it’s faded considerably under treatment, and none of my other fish appear to visibly have it. I have ruby reef kick-ich if needed, tho.

Today, after feeding and dosing, the wrasse is swimming near the top of the water, seemingly breathing air, and jumping. No stress colors, and the angel hasn’t paled at all (although, it’s pooping out a heck of a worm right now). My question is, is the wrasse alright, or just doing wrasse stuff? I don’t want to do a wc if it’s not necessary, just so that the fish can bathe in the medication. Please let me know, if it really is stress I want to do a wc as soon as possible!

When a fish is porpoising at the surface like this, its often along with surface film seen, a lack of oxygen. In addition and respectfully, you are using some of the worse products on the market and also the ammonia badge is often good for a couple of weeks as its also formulated for freshwater and effectiveness is reduced when exposed to chemicals. You mixed the three treatments at the same time , not recommended and worse is, Pimafix and Melafix are worthless tonics made mainly of teak tree oil and Ich-x claimed safe for reef is also safe for ich as it has little to any effect. You want to in a setting like this test and monitor ammonia with a reliable test kit, amd here you went cheap and regarding the wrasse, this may ne a condition known as UNWD in which shows neurological symptoms where fish either cannot swim well, swims tail down or swims with a bent spine and despite all this, the wrasse will still attempt to feed and display no damage such as crashing into objects. Other could be depending where fish is from, cyanide capture which is delayed but the fish ends up in this state
If ich, best and safest medication would be coppersafe or Copper power at 2.25ppm monitored with Hanna brand Copper test kit and air stone added.

I’m also monitoring with the Hanna marine masters test kit. I have the ammonia badge on there at a glance. As for the medication, I read a post here regarding qt procedures that recommended the two mixed here. As much as I appreciate the advice, you’re kinda being combative. This isn’t my first fish, and I have plenty of perfectly healthy fish and corals in perfectly healthy set ups, this is just my first wrasse. I did a wc, was just looking for a little guidance on a very hard to understand procedure. I’m also running API general cure and prazipro, and I cupramine if the ich x didn’t seem to be working (I’m hesitant because the sponge filter in the qt set up normally lives in my sump). I apologies for not doing things right, but there’s no need to be aggressive, particularly when you don’t have every detail, and are coming at this assuming I’m some kind of novice, or stupid.

I said respectively and apologize if it sounded harsh but more alerting you to mixture of meds and hopefully not mixing the General cure and prazi as General cure contains prazi already. There are/were too many meds being mixed and be careful what you read as wrasses are sensitive in many cases and if using cupramine if deemed necessary, dose at .45 as maximum is .5 and not the copper version i'd use for sensitive fish but if monitored will will work. The chelated version of coppersafe much safer.

He’s just letting you know those meds are not appropriate and pointing you to the meds that do work. There are many things that are out there and people claim work but he knows what he’s talking about. Look up some articles by Jay Hemdal on qt and disease treatment. You will see the same.

I can’t say for sure why your wrasse is porpoising, that can be from a number of different things.

I see a lot of particles in the water. Had you just added food? The water surface also seems a bit oily.

What else are you treating with? The three products you mentioned do not have a good track record for treating marine fish diseases. I’m worried though, that there might be some cross reaction going on here.

I understand it’s too late now, but here is the treatment regimen I recommend for most external fish parasites:

I had just fed the tank (I just used a little of what goes in my dt, so spirulina enhanced mysis, aminos, phyto, a little nori, garlic guard, and TDO chromaboost). I did a wc and am looking into all the medication and qt threads recommended. I appreciate all the advice from everyone. The wrasse had stopped jumping before I even did the WC, so who knows if it was even needed, but I’d rather be safe than sorry
