Is there a piece of equipment that you refuse to buy used and why?

I’m just started and I’m a pretty big proponent of used gear (in good condition that looks well taken care of). Is there and equipment I should be more careful of used, like lights?

Thanks in advance.

I won’t but a used tank. If I’m gonna invest all the time and money into a glass box it’s dang sure gonna be a new glass box. That’s like getting a new Porsche and putting a junkyard engine in it…. Like why skimp on the most important thing.

Older lights (like LEDs with 5+ years of use), heaters over a year old, dosing pumps where they don’t know the age of tubing. Sucks to buy a dosing pump to a save a few bucks only to realize it needs all the wear and tear items replaced.

Even the aquarium itself is a crap shoot when buying used. Petco’s 50% off sale is a great way to get a good tank at a low price.

I got ripped on some AI Sols back in the day, bought 4 units for $1200, just to have them crap out within 2 months. Some I lost the blues, another one lost the whites. Got out of the hobby shortly after. Almost 6 years later and I'm buying all new, hard to trust anyone now days
Sounds like they worked for 2 months though, doesn’t seem like you can blame the person you bought them from.

I figured it might as well be me (it was only a matter of time...)

I have a 750xxl G1. I bought it used about 2 years ago. The guy had it since 2017?
I got the upgrade kit before I added water.

The tank looks great. Knock on wood that it doesn't fail

I am thinking of going to a bigger tank like a 280g

Almost all my gear has been used except for UV. Couldn't find them for the life of me on the market place. Finally got one new, now I can't sell my used one. Sheesh

If you got the upgrade kit it shouldn't sag/break, so that's half the battle right there. Just be careful scraping around the seams as that's a potential weak point if there isn't any corner bracing (they added this on the v3 along with thicker bottom glass on the v2 and v3).

Also got my 750xxl v1 2nd hand.. seam already went, so I fixed it and did a side and bottom bracing.. also got the upgrade kit.
